KURT SCHMID-EHMEN (Torgau, Germany, 1901-Stamberg, Germany, 1968). "Bust of Mrs Schmid-Ehmen, 1934. Plaster. Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Size: 33 cm. This bust is notable for its simplicity of form, reminiscent of Egyptian art and the realism of funerary masks. Trained at the Leipzing and Munich Academy, among his first important works is the bust of the famous pianist Josep Pembauer, teacher of the concert pianist Hetty Haelssig, Schmid's future wife, whom he portrays here as Mrs Schmid-Ehmen. They met in the early 1920s and married in 1929, according to the catalogue of the exhibition held at the MEAM. Schmid-Ehmen's entry into the Nazi party took place in the 1930s, thanks to his friendship with the architect Paul Ludwing Troost, from whom he received his first commissions and who introduced him to Adolf Hitler. In fact, he was the creator of the imperial eagle, the emblem of the Nazi party. He was interested in sculpting tombs as well as the human face.

KURT SCHMID-EHMEN NAZI EAGLE CREATOR ARCHIVE

        Est: $5,000 - $10,000

(1901-1968) German sculptor of monumental Nazi eagles which came to symbolize the Nazi party. He created numerous Nazi eagle monuments, most famously the eagle at the Reichskanzlei in Berlin, the eagle at the Nuremberg rally stadium, and his biggest piece, a nine-meter tall eagle unveiled at the German Pavillion at the 1937 World's Exhibition held in Paris. On offer is a plaster sculpture of a Nazi Reichs eagle clutching an oak leaf wreath with a static swastika. The eagle sculpture has a wooden bracket as bracing, some cracks have developed over time (see images), the sculpture measures 9.25 x 9.25 inches. Possibly a mock-up for a larger version to be installed at a building. This one-of-a-kind model is accompanied by a large archive of original photo negatives, an architectural blueprint of a stadium, many documents, pamphlets. The architectural drawing shows a large oval stadium, possibly for soccer, on tracing paper measuring 42.75 x 33 inches. This collection contains 59 original negatives, medium format and sheet film sized, of his work and process; three glass plate negatives, one is broken; 25 original photographic prints; and 38 documents once belonging to Schmid-Ehmen. The photos and negatives show the design and construction of several eagles in Schmid-Ehmen's studio, the sculpting of a female figure, presentation of one of his eagles, installation of one of the eagles on a building in Germany, and some reference photos of eagles from the zoo. The 38 documents include letters from his lawyer to sue other companies for plagiarism of the eagle, ration cards, two Christmas cards, letters to ask him to be featured in an art magazine, and eleven issues of the Reichs Guild for the Association of Sculptors and Stonemasons. Possibly the last collection of original relics documenting Schmid-Ehmen's work that is for sale. For viewing purposes a few negatives have been copy as positives, the archives contains many more negatives not shown here.

Prof. Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, the “Eagle Maker”, is regarded to be the creator of the Reichs Eagle and the eagle emblem of the National Socialist Party. He studied at the Leipzig Academy with Adolf Lehnert and the Munich Academy, was a master student of Bernhard Bleeker and initially attracted attention with numerous busts, including one of the famous pianist Josef Pembaur, the teacher of the concert pianist Hetty Haelssig (later Schmid-Ehmen). KURT SCHMID-EHMEN'S REFERENCE PHOTOS FOR A BUST OF ADOLF WAGNER

        Est: $80 - $100

A fine archive of photographs and documents related to the work and family of notable Third Reich sculptor KURT SCHMID-EHMEN (1901-1968), who designed monumental 'reichsadler' eagle sculptures for the German Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exhibition, the Reich Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg and the 'Fedherrnhalle', and is credited with originating the design. The lot includes a group of seven approx. 6 1/2 x 8 in. photographs featuring bust images of Gauleiter and Deputy Prime Minister of Bavaria ADOLF WAGNER (1890-1944), showing his head from the back, sides and various diagonal views. The photographs are printed on period-correct Agfa-Brovira paper, and all are smeared with traces of grey clay, indicating that they were used by Schmid-Ehmen as artist's references during the sculpting of a bust of Wagner. The sculptor's finger and thumbprints are clearly visible in the clay on two of the prints. A second group of six b/w photo prints, ranging in size from 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. to 7 x 9 1/2 in., shows the resulting bust of Wagner as both the clay original and the final bronze copy, all again printed on period Agfa-Brovira paper. Additional period photos include a 12 x 15 1/2 in. print of Schmid-Ehmen's sculpture 'The Spear Carrier', which was later purchased by Adolf Hitler, unfortunately marred by a heavy horizontal crease; a 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. b/w snapshot showing the monumental 'Reichsadler' at the Nuremberg rally grounds under construction; two 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. snapshots showing Schmid-Ehman viewing two additional sculptures; a 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. snapshot showing Adolf Wagner with an unidentified woman; a 3 1/2 x 4 in. snapshot showing two unidentified women, likely Schmid-Ehmen's wife and mother; and a 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. b/w/ photo portrait presenting a bust view of Schmid-Ehmen, likely taken immediately postwar. The lot is rounded out by three documents related to Schmid-Ehmen and his family, includes: T.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Munich, May 29, 1945, Hetty Schmid-Ehmen's 'Ausweis' issued by the American captors of the city one month following its fall. The document lists her place and date of birth, her residence, and her profession as a pianist. Her identification photo is affixed at top right, and the mayor of Munich signs at the conclusion in pencil. Shows a vertical fold at center with some splits, with notable chips to the edges, else very good. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Munich, July 6, 1945, a slip confirming that Kurt Schmid-Ehmen has registered himself with the police; and a war-date insurance card for a woman, on which Hetty Schmid-Ehmen is listed as the holder's employer. Several modern prints of photos showing Schmid-Ehmen and his work are also present. Overall, a fine grouping giving insight into the working process of one of the most notable sculptors of the Third Reich.

KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH - Professor Kurt Schmid-Ehmen (1901 - 1968) - "Liebende" (tr. "Lovers") Half relief in plaster on a wooden base. Erotic depiction of two naked lovers embracing. Slightly damaged, restored in places. Height circa 107 cm. As an individual piece, this plaster relief has an interesting history. Despite being produced as early as 1942, the scarcity of materials meant that it could not be cast in bronze until 1958. In 2008, the bronze relief was sold for 9,000 euro as lot 3571 in the Hermann Historica Auction 56. Similar works created by Schmid-Ehmen during the 1920s/30s obviously influenced this relief, which is a direct testament to the mature, masterly style of the artist.

        Professor Kurt Schmid-Ehmen (1901 - 1968) - a portrait in relief of Mathilde Ludendorff.

She held her own views about nationalistic religious conspiracy theories, according to which Jews, Jesuits and Freemasons were cooperating as supranational powers. After the war she founded the "Bund für Deutsche Gotterkenntnis" (alliance for German awareness of God or Ludendorff Movement). The portrait was made in 1963 on the occasion of the abrogation of the judgement against her as chief culprit.

A model of the eagle in the Luitpold Arena at the Nazis Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg Bronze with dark patina. Detailed miniature sculpture. Height 26 cm. Marble base. Total height 33.5 cm. Schmid-Ehmen only made one of these small models of the original seven-meter tall eagle before 1945. It was commissioned by the city of Nuremberg as a gift to Reichsminister Hans Kerrl. After the war, he made about a handful of these model eagles. Prof. Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, the "Eagle-Maker", is considered to be the creator of the Reichs eagle and the eagle emblem of the National-Socialist Party. He studied at the art academies in Leipzig and Munich, and became Bernhard Bleeker's master student. He joined the NSDAP in the early 30s. His personal acquaintanceship with Adolf Hitler led to commisions such as the memorial in the Feldherrnhalle for those killed on 9 November 1923, the eagles at the NSDAP buildings in Munich and Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg, and the relief eagle for the smoking lounge in the New Reichs Chancellery. He created his largest bronze eagle (nine meters in height) for the German pavilion at the Paris World Exposition in 1937, and received the Grand Prix of the République Fran‡aise for it. Cf. Hermann Historica, 53rd auction, lot 3073. Another model eagle is supposedly in a museum, and one in an American private collection.
