Item Overview

Description

in the shape of the eagle at the Luitpold Arena on the Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg. Bronze, silvered, monogrammed laterally "K.S.E.". The multi-piece, silvered resp. ebonised base with the presentation inscription "Gewidmet von der Belegschaft" (Bestowed by the staff). Detailed miniature sculpture. Height 26 cm, total height 35 cm. The silvering probably later or renewed. Modelled on the seven-metre tall original at the Nazi party rally grounds. Prof. Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, the "eagle maker", is considered to be the creator of the Reich eagle and the emblem of the National-Socialist party. He studied at the art academies in Leipzig and Munich, and became Bernhard Bleeker's master student. He joined the NSDAP in the early 30s. His personal acquaintanceship with Adolf Hitler led to commissions such as the memorial in the Feldherrnhalle for those killed on 9 November 1923, the eagles at the NSDAP buildings in Munich and Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg, and the eagle relief for the smoking lounge in the New Reich Chancellery. He created his largest bronze eagle (nine metres in height) for the German pavilion at the Paris World Exposition in 1937, and received the Grand Prix of the République Fran‡aise for it. Cf. Hermann Historica, 53rd auction, lot 3073. Another eagle model is supposedly in a museum, and one in an American private collection.
