The Author of "Maryland, My Maryland" Is The Guest Of Honor On Maryland Day

RANDALL, James Ryder (1839-1908) was an American journalist and poet. He is best remembered as the author of "Maryland, My Maryland". He is most remembered for writing the poem "Maryland, My Maryland," which is also the reason for his being called the "Poet Laureate of the Lost Cause". It became a war hymn of the Confederacy after the poem's words were set to the tune "Lauriger Horatius" (the tune of O Tannenbaum) during the Civil War by Jennie Cary, a member of a prominent Maryland and Virginia family. It later became the state song of Maryland. Randall wrote the poem after learning that his friend Francis X. Ward, of Randallstown, Maryland, was killed by the 6th Massachusetts Militia in the Baltimore Riot of April 19, 1861. The work was first published a week later on April 26, in the New Orleans newspaper The Sunday Delta. Autograph Letter Signed "James R. Randall", on Augusta Chronicle Newspaper letterhead, Augusta, August 23, 1907 written to the Editor of The Citizen. In large part "Enclosed please find a negative which may suit your purpose. On Sept 12 next I will be the guest of honor of the State of Maryland, at Jamestown on Maryland Day. That would be the best time to present my picture. ...."

George Oves Lebanon 8 Day Tall Case Clock

DESCRIPTION: A very fine circa 1810-20 Federal tall case clock in cherry by George Oves (1783-1837)of Lebanon County (and so signed on the dial). The case consisting of high Chippendale ogee feet supporting a base and delicate waist with fine string inlays. The bonnet with simple inverted cup finials and magnificent rosettes set within a well proportioned swans neck arch. The painted Pennsylvania dial signed "George Oves -- Lebanon" The 8 day day movement behind in fine condition. Overall, perhaps the finest proportioned Oves clock known and reflecting the maturity of both his skill and the anonymous cabinetmaker who created the case. MEASUREMENTS: 19-1/2" x 10-1/2" x 103" high. CONDITION: RUNNING? Wear consistent with age - CHECK!

Sehr gut in Druck und Farbe, berieben. Der 5. Tokugawa-Shogun Tsunayoshi (Tokugawa Tsunayoshi 德川纲吉 5代) unterweist Osame, wie sie sich als Kurtisane zu verhalten hat. Auf der 23 Blätter umfassenden Serie sind die dramatischen Höhepunkte verschiedener Kabuki-Stücke dargestellt. Entgegen einer Theateraufführung sind die Personen jedoch keine Schauspieler, sondern ungeschminkte, von ihren Leidenschaften getriebene Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut, die in natürlicher Umgebung agieren. Der freie künstlerische Umgang Yoshitoshis mit den Personen, Ereignissen und Handlungsorten macht eine genaue Bestimmung, welche Theaterstücke ihm als Inspirationsquelle gedient haben könnten, nur selten möglich. Schriftliche Zeugnisse darüber oder Angaben auf den Bildern gibt es keine. Erschwert wird das Ganze noch dadurch, dass sich verschiedene Stückeschreiber häufig des gleichen Stoffes bedienten, vor allem dann, wenn ein konkretes, besonders spektakuläres Tagesereignis die allgemeinen Gemüter bewegte. Zudem sind von vielen Kabukistücken nur noch die Titel überliefert, Kenntnisse über Personen und Handlung gingen verloren. Tsunayoshis Regentschaft fällt genau in jene, als Genroku (1688 - 1704) bekannt-berüchtigte Periode Japans, die für ihre Verschwendungssucht, die leichte Hand, mit der das Gold für Vergnügungen aller Art hinausgeworfen wurde, legendär geworden ist. Das Elend seiner Untertanen kümmerte den Shogun wenig. Ungeachtet der augenscheinlichen Missstände im ganzen Lande und der desaströsen finanziellen Lage wurde an seinem Hofe ein Fest nach dem anderen gefeiert. Unzählige junge Mädchen und Frauen standen dem Shogun Tag und Nacht als Gespielinnen zur Verfügung, eingehüllt in Luxus und Seide, ausgewählt von seiner Mutter aus einem Kreis der Schönsten aller Schönen, willfährig zur Lust und verfügbar für Vergnügungen jeglicher Art. Glaubt man der alten Geschichtsschreibung, griff die ins Abseits gestellte kinderlose Gattin des Shogun schließlich zum Dolch und stieß ihn des Nachts ihrem maßlosen, von Skandalgeschichten umwitterten Gatten in die Brust. Danach gab sich Mi-daidokoro selbst den Tod; als Retterin der Nation, die sich selbst aufgeopfert hat, um weiteres Unheil von ihrem Volk abzuwenden, wurde sie im Nachhinein als nationale Heldin verehrt.
