    • Robert Henry Cheney and Alfred Capel-Cure. Guyscliffe Entrance
      Dec. 12, 2023

Robert Henry Cheney and Alfred Capel-Cure. Guyscliffe Entrance

      Est: $200 - $300

CHENEY, ROBERT HENRY and ALFRED CAPEL-CURE Guy's Cliffe Entrance, circa 1850s. Albumen print from a paper negative, 7 x 8 1/2 inches tipped by the corners to the original thin card mount, titled in ink; together with SUTCLIFFE, FRANK MEADOWS. Sheep Grazing. Albumen print (laid to a thin sheet of modern paper), 1880s. Minor wear to both, the Cheney with excellent tones. Cheney and Capel-Cure were pioneering British photographers, and their work is rare. See the National Gallery of Canada: "The date when Robert Cheney actively took up photography remains unclear, though it seems likely he was influenced by the enthusiasm of his nephew, Alfred Capel Cure, who became a prolific calotypist around 1850 while serving in the army. Following Cheney's death in 1866, Capel Cure printed his uncle's surviving negatives, one of which is this study of Guy's Cliffe, Warwickshire. Never intended for public display, this image assumes the status of a documentary sketch, one of a number made at Guy's Cliffe by both men as they took the equivalent of a British Grand Tour visiting the stately homes and landscaped gardens of the aristocracy and gentry, where as social equals, they would have been welcomed with their cameras and apparatus." This example apparently sold at Argus Auctions, November 4, 1978, lot 16.

Cheney, Robert Henry: Der Clitumnus-Tempel bei Spoleto

      Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Der Clitumnus-Tempel bei Spoleto. Aquarell auf Aquarellpapier. 25,2 x 17 cm. Verso von alter Hand in Bleistift (eigenh.?) bez. "May 7 Temple of Clitumnus". Das Aquarell entstand vermutlich am 7. Mai 1833.
