Notes

The landscape gardener Charles Bridgeman (d. 1738) laid out this, one of the first 'picturesque' gardens, for the owner Matthew Prior who bought the house in 1720. The gardens were at their mature best by the 1830s when Cheney, one of the better gentleman pupils of Peter De Wint painted them. 'Mr Cheney of Badger' is a well respected name, which appears as a footnote in the biographies of several well known artist of the 19th century, to whom a Mr Cheney was a generous patron. The brothers Robert Henry and Edward Cheney lived at Badger Hall, Shropshire. Robert visited Venice, France and southern Ireland in the 1830s, he also painted the houses and parks of friends in England, though few of his English drawings are dated

Provenance: By descent through the artist's sister, Frederica Capel Cure to the Cheney Sale, Christies 12.10.2005 (lot 112)
