inscribed 'Tomb of the Scipios. Rome' (lower right, on the mount) and further inscribed and dated 'Tomb of the Scipios Rome March 31. 1838.' (on the reverse of the mount)

Notes

Publicus Cornelius Scipio (185-129 B.C.) distinguished himself in his military career and is particularly famous for his victory over the Carthaginians. His family's tomb is located on the Via Augusta just outside Rome.
