        Jul. 17, 2023

1791 Criticisms on The Rolliad Four Works in One Volume, 1790-1791 LEATHER

        Est: -

[Joseph Richardson, George Ellis, Richard Tickell, et al:] Criticisms of the Rolliad. Part the First. [BOUND WITH:] Criticisms of the Rolliad. Part the Second. [BOUND WITH:] Probationary Odes for the Laureatship; with a Preliminary Discourse by Sir John Hawkins, Knt. [BOUND WITH:] Political Miscellanies. By the Authors of The Rolliad and Probationary Odes. London: Printed for J[ames] Ridgway, 1791, 1790. Four works in one volume, 8vo (22 cm) in early/period tree calf; 164 p.; iv, 136 p.; xliv, 131, [1] p.; [iii]-viii, 156 p. Ninth and fourth editions of the first and second parts of the Rolliad; ninth edition of the Odes; first edition of the Miscellanies. As the binding’s spine label states, this is the “Rolliad Compleat.” The Rolliad was a popular, bitterly satirical attack on William Pitt and his followers, disguised in the surprisingly post-modernist form of a series of mock reviews of a non-existent epic poem entitled The Rolliad. Written by various Whig members of the "Esto Perpetua Club" (Richard Tickell, Richard Fitzpatrick, Joseph Richardson, George Ellis, French Laurence and others) and first issued piecemeal in the Morning Herald in 1784, it is a landmark in the history of political satire, vivacious and witty, bizarre and scabrous. The authors followed up on its success with the Probationary Odes, a collection of satires and parodies purporting to be the competitive essays of Thomas Warton’s rivals for the post of poet laureate. Front paste-down with the engraved armorial bookplate of Sir John Eden, Bt. (1740-1812). Son of signer Benjamin Rush (1780-1859), he helped bring about the Monroe Doctrine. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, January 19, 1842. Letter to Benjamin Taylor. In part: "There has been some mistake about your deed, which I regret on many accounts and can scarcely explain the cause of, though sure it has not originated with you. I never contemplated the preparation of it here, not having the form, though if I had, I could draw it in half an hour...And now, my dear Sir, as to what you say at the close of your letter about the vacant judgeship in this vicinity, I scarcely know what reply to make-beyond saying how I fully estimate your voluntary friendship on the occasion. I have no right to ask a favor of President Tyler, though holding him in all respect." Rush also adds a short postscript on the following page, signed "R. R." revere of second integral page is addressed in Rush's hand. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, mounting remnant along reverse of second page, and two small areas of paper loss from wax seal.

WALLICH, Nathaniel (1786-1854). Plantae asiaticae rariores; or, Descriptions and figures of a select number of unpublished East Indian Plants. London: [Richard Taylor for] Treuttel and Würtz, [1829]-1830-1832. 3 volumes, 2o (525 x 360 mm.), 295 hand-colored lithographic plates on 294 sheets, by M. Gauci and Weddell after Gorchand, Vishnu Prasad, M. Curtis, Miss Drake, and others, plates 222/223 constituting one folding plate, printed by Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Co., Engelmann & Co., and Graf & Soret, one hand-colored engraved plate (plate 6 in vol. I), plates 226-300 constituting one folding double-page engraved map. (A few plates with marginal surface soiling, a few plates trimmed touching imprint, some light spotting predominately to text leaves.) Contemporary tan morocco gilt, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, gilt-lettered in 2, edges gilt (rebacked preserving original spines, corners renewed, rubbed, hinges starting, upper cover of vol. 2 partially detached). A MAGNIFICENT RENDERING OF INDIAN PLANTS according to European taste, including on the first plate the orchid tree (Amherstia nobilis) which the author found near a derelict monastery on the Salween river in what is now Myanmar. Like Roxburgh's earlier Plants of the Coast of Coromandel, this work was heavily subsidized by the East India Company, who even employed the same team of artists at the Calcutta botanic garden where Wallich served as director from 1817 to 1846. The Indian plant illustrator Gorchand executed 146 watercolor paintings for the work, and his colleague Vishnu Prasad 109, "but all that is known about these two is their miserable pay - they received the same salary as scribes" (Lack). Wallich had several years' leave of absence in England to supervise the printing and coloring. According to his preface, the skilled colorist was "Mr. John Clark."
