Byron & Dampier - Great Volcano of Peli, at Hawaii

This lovely hand-colored, aquatint engraving was done by Robert Dampier as part of George Anson Byron's Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde to the Sandwich Islands in the Years 1824-1825. The work was published in London by John Murray in 1826. The engraving is on India paper which is mounted to a larger sheet with 1826 Whaman watermark. The work was an account of the voyage to Hawaii to return the bodies of King Kamehameha ll and Queen Kamamalu, who passed away from measles while on a state visit to London in 1824. It detailed the King's visit as well as the history of British exploration to the Hawaiian islands. Sir Peter Buck described the voyage as "one of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another." (Forbes) “Captain George Anson Byron was the cousin of the famous poet and succeeded to his title. This expedition, his last appointment afloat, was undertaken to convey back to the Hawaiian Islands the remains of their King Kamehameha II and his Queen, who had died from measles during their state visit to England." Lord Byron Signature with His Wax Seal

No mere patron of the Romantic Movement was George Gordon Byron (1788-1824)—to be sure, he was a leader. This poet was more wordsmith than even the most “enlightened” of his essayist contemporaries, and, too, his poetic works remain among the most influential of all 19th Century literary pieces. Here offered is an impressive example of Lord Byron’s rare signature. Penned along a 1.5 x 3.5 slip with wax seal, the subject wrote “Byron” with an emphatic flair. Though portions of his graceful penmanship have faded slightly, the signature projects nicely against its off-white medium.

approximately 14 x 21 cm, loosely window-mounted in card held by two butterfly clips with a typed initialled note by Harold Nicolson pasted to verso, 'This piece of damask was given me by James Pope-Hennessy. It comes from the bed at Seaham [Hall, County Durham], in which Byron spent his bridal night. There was a fire in the room and the red curtains were drawn round the bed. Byron woke up to see the flames playing through the curtains [of the flickering candlelight]. He said "Am I in Hell?" Lady Byron was much wounded by this remark. Byron, George Gordon, Lord. (1788-1824) Legendary British poet who was instrumental in creating the Romantic Movement; he died fighting for Greek independence. Autograph manuscript, being four lines from his first major poem "Oscar of Alva," reading: "And Mora's eyes could Allen move/She bade his wounded pride rebel/Alas! that eyes which beamed with love/Should urge the soul to deeds of hell." Fine, with an interesting history, and two corrections, showing that this was his actual working manuscript. He originally began the second line with "Love," changing it to "She," and the next to last word in that line he changed to "Pride" from an indistinguishable original word. The piece is mounted to a larger sheet on which is written, "The above is Lord Byron's writing and is the 74th verse of the poem entitled 'Oscar of Alva,' published in his 'Hours of Idleness,' written when he was at Southwell and is a part of the Original M.S." This is in the hand of Elizabeth Pigot, a longtime friend whose house Southwell was virtually Byron's adopted home, and with whom he exchanged verses and books. When he left her, they parted on close terms and continued to correspond. He gave her the manuscript of "Oscar of Alva" to transcribe for publication, and she later cut it up to give out. Only 14 of these cut slips of verses from this poem are known to exist, and many of them are in institutions. Manuscripts of Byron are of the greatest rarity. At the bottom of the page, Elizabeth has written out and signed her own poem in praise of Byron, beginning "Byron! I knew thee in thy early day, When yet thy Sun had scarcely shown a ray...." Lettre pleine de colère, écrite sous le choc de la mort de sa mère (1er août 1811), alors que Byron revient d'un séjour de deux ans en Grèce (arrivé à Londres le 14 juillet, il partit le 2 août pour Newstead Abbey, ayant reçu la nouvelle du décès). Cette lettre semble inédite. Il a reçu sa lettre indignée et ne comprend pas, puisqu'il s'agissait d'une voiture, l'objection à la présence d'un carrossier [il s'agit de la commande par Byron d'une voiture, puis de l'achat d'une voiture appartenant à Webster pour venir de Londres à Newstead Abbey]. Il n'est pas dans son pouvoir de l'offenser, et face au refus de Byron, qu'il s'appelle son ancien ami suggère qu'il soit son futur ennemi. Pourtant l'ami ne saurait avoir une opinion plus humble de Byron que Byron lui-même, et Byron trouve dans le style de son épître quelque chose de si teuton, que l'on pourrait supposer que son tuteur allemand ne l'eût pas relâché : elle commence par une insulte et se termine par une absurdité... Il le remercie de ses efforts pour sa défense, et cite plaisamment une épigramme de Prior... Pourquoi W. le défend-il et pourquoi l'attaque-t-il ? Tout est si mélangé, c'est à peine si Byron distingue entre les deux. Il n'a ni le caractère ni les qualités pour se rendre un objet incessant de débat, il n'imagine pas qu'en disant à d'autres hommes qu'ils sont des sots, il prouve que lui-même est sage, et il sait que sa vie future a peu à espérer de ses folies passées (on eût pu dire vices), pourtant il compte être jugé seul... Son amitié ou son inimitié valent si peu que Byron ne l'insultera ni en lui proposant l'une, ni en le menaçant de l'autre, mais il souhaite que toutes futures communications soient écrites dans la langue d'un gentleman, parce que, sans se sentir dégradé par l'extravagance de ses expressions, les coutumes du très vilain monde dans lequel ils vivent, les obligent à adopter de sottes mesures en conséquence de protestations excessives... Et de conclure, brutalement, que sa mère repose morte dans la chambre même où a couché l'ami lorsqu'il fit à Byron l'honneur de sa compagnie à l'abbaye. PREMIÈRE ÉDITION COLLECTIVE DES OEUVRES DE BYRON. TRÈS PRÉCIEUX EXEMPLAIRE ANNOTÉ PAR STENDHAL. Stendhal fit la connaissance de lord Byron, pour lequel il nourrissait une grande admiration, en octobre 1816, dans la loge que louait son ami Ludovic de Brême à la Scala de Milan. Il fit spécialement relier ce volume des oeuvres complètes du poète anglais en y incorporant à la fin quelques illustrations et des morceaux variés de Virgile, Dante, l'Arioste, le Tasse et Métastase, qui devaient accompagner dans son esprit l'oeuvre du poète anglais. Stendhal a enrichi l'exemplaire d'une vingtaine de notes autographes marginales au crayon, dans lesquelles il commente le texte : "à méditer", "sublime", "by Mr Hobhouse (ami de Byron)" ou encore, à côté d'une note sur le Pèlerinage de Childe Harold : "vu 18 décembre 1827", "Rome". Il a aussi numéroté les strophes d'un des poèmes et, surtout, pris des notes à l'encre sur les gardes. On peut par exemple lire ces convictions de Stendhal sur son art : "1υeυrυe règle : des idées vraies ou intéressantes exprimées clairement. 2υeυmυe règle : quand on fait un ouvrage de l'imaginaire traduit en d'autres tems, la forme ne doit avoir que les [récentes ?] pensées, quoique le vulgaire incapable de discerner le fond, ne voye que la forme". On trouve de sa main des dates et événements très importants à la fin du livre : "20 mai 1830 je corrige la fin [partiellement effacé] of le rouge et le noir ", "17 juin 1821 Matilde ", allusion à sa rupture avec une des grandes passions de sa vie : Matilde Viscontini Dembowski, et encore cette profession de foi en commentaire d'une citation de Byron, à propos des lecteurs : "je crois qu'il suffit dans un roman de les transporter dans un monde un peu moins plat et laid que l'ordinaire" et cette note "21 février 35, 5 jours de confettis et de carnaval à Rome" qui porte la date la plus ancienne. Cet exemplaire a visiblement été son vade mecum pendant son séjour en Italie en tant que consul, de 1830 à 1835. On y trouve d'ailleurs parmi les notes ajoutées à la fin de l'ouvrage, la date "18 mars 1832 Ancône" qui marque le début de sa mission de sous-intendant du corps expéditionnaire français. Une note manuscrite de Paul Gabriac, datée de Paris 1865 précise "Ce livre a appartenu à Henri Beyle, (de Stendhal) qui le légua à son ami Balfin, négociant à Rome, qui le donna à Jeanne-Marie Gabriac, de qui je le tien ". Balfin et Gabriac sont deux négociants cités dans une des lettres de Stendhal au comte Sebastiani, ministre des Affaires étrangères : "J'ai soumis ces deux états aux lumières des négociants les plus instruits (MM. Balfin, La Rosière, Laisné, Dubois, Gabriac)". Précieux ouvrage composé par Stendhal à partir des oeuvres de Byron et contenant des notes personnelles très révélatrices tant sur l'oeuvre du poète anglais que sur la vie privée de Stendhal lui-même. TWO PORTRAITS: i) BY AN UNKNOWN ARTIST, pencil drawing, head and shoulders, profile facing right, head slightly raised, captioned below on original leaf onto which the drawing is tipped 'An original sketch of Lord Byron' in an early nineteenth-century 'print' (possibly female) hand and with a note on the verso in another nineteenth-century hand 'Original, unpublished sketch of Lord Byron from life (artist unknown)', framed and glazed, size of image 3¾ x 3¼ inches (9.5 x 8 cm), overall size 10¼ x 9 ¼ inches (25.5 x 23.5 cm) [early nineteenth century] Dr Annette Peach published this drawing in her thesis on portraits of Byron and subsequently in the Walpole Society, 2000. She noted: 'In the attention given to the profile line, the sketch resembles that made by Lady Byron in 1815 which also shows the sitter facing to the right, a pose Byron did not adopt with professional artists...in the absence of any known provenance the identification of the sitter remains conjectural.' It is interesting in view of the fact that Byron was known to have a slight malformation of the ear-lobe that Dr Peach notes of this portrait 'ear-lobe indistinct'. ii) BY CRAWFORD, bronzed base metal round medallion, head and shoulders, profile facing left, signed 'Crawford' on the truncation, inscribed on the verso of the frame 'Medallion portrait of the poet... "The Byron is the finest likeness of the Noble Poet we have ever seen" – Edinburgh Evening Post', framed and glazed in a contemporary square miniature frame with ring for suspension, size of image 4¼ inches (11 cm), overall size 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm), [nineteenth century] The following entry under Crawford appears in L. Endorsement signed (with initial 'M'), n.p., n.d., on a wrapper enclosing a dossier in French relating to the death of Lord Byron, together 13 leaves, folio; together with an autograph endorsement signed, Vienna, 11 April 1853, on a wrapper lacking contents; the two wrappers numbered 'zu Num. 1261' and 'zu 1262'. The first endorsement reads 'Report of the K.K. Consul Micarelli at Zante on 24 November 1824 relating to the demise of Lord Byron and the talismans carried by him'. The report, in French, gives first a translation of the scroll ('rouleau') which Lord Byron was carrying on his body: 'Le rouleau commence au milieu d'une conversation de Salomon avec Satan. L'écriture est très mauvaise et très incorrecte'; the text ends 'Le Maître et possesseur de ce Talisman est Ybrahim fils de Mustufa'; there follows a description of the seal with which Lord Byron's 'lettre' (presumably the preceding text) is sealed, which bears the name Edward Caitsford or Catchford and the date 1778. The endorsement in Metternich's autograph relates to annexed documents (not present) concerning an ornamental chest found in Cannes, where, he notes, Napoleon landed in 1815 on his return from Elba. The recipient is almost certainly Lady Eleanor Butler, daughter of the sixteenth Earl of Ormonde, who was then famous because of her living with two other women as a recluse in the Vale of Llangollen, together known as the "Three Ladies of Llangollen." The only other contemporary Lady Eleanor Butler was her niece of the same name, who had been several years married at the time of this book's publication.
