Description

George Noel Gordon, Lord BYRON (1788-1824).
« I have received your indignant letter. - As our subject was a carriage why object to the presence of a coachmaker ? - Knowing you so well as I have done, my good friend, it is out of your power to offend me ; I sincerely wish you well, in the capacity of my present or (as you style yourself) my "former friend". - You make me of too much importance by this hint that you may be my future enemy. - You can hardly think more humbly of me, than I think of myself, & my answering such an epistle as your last is a proof of that opinion. - Indeed, from the tenor & style I should hardly suspect it to be your own composition, there is something so Teutonic in the whole, that one might suppose your German tutor had not released his pupil. - It begins with an insult, & ends with an absurdity. - I send you my sincere thanks for your exertions (during my travels) in my defence, & in return recommend the perusal of Prior's epigram.
To John I owe great obligation
But John unhappily thought fit
To publish it to all the nations,
So John & I are more than quit !
Why defend me, my dear W. ? Believe me, I am not worth a defence ; - why attack me ? When I have not provoked the assault ? - Your attacks and defenses are so jumbled together that I am hardly able to distinguish which is which. - I have no "character no merits" in my own estimation or that of others, to render me so conspicuous an object of discussion, nor do I at all conceive that by telling other men they are fools, I have proved myself to be wise. - My "future life" I know (without your lucid intimation) has little to hope from my former follies (you might have said vices) yet I trust I shall "stand or fall alone" as I should be sorry to involve others in the latter predicament. - My friendship or enmity are worth so little that I shall not insult you by offering the one, or threatening the other. - If you have any thing more to say on carriages, address it to the coachmaker, if to me, you know my address. - But let your letter be in the langage of a gentleman, because, though I shall never feel myself degraded by the rashness of your expressions, the customs of the very bad world we live in, compel us to adopt foolish measures in consequence of intemperate expostulation. - You are not aware that my mother lies dead in the very chamber where you slept when I had the honour of your company at the abbey. - Think of my feelings, & Pause ! »...
