Item Overview

Description

BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord (1788-1824). English Bards and Scotch Reviewers; A Satire. London: Printed for James Cawthorn and Hailes, 1811.

8 o. Half-title. (Lacks advertisement leaf.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, edges gilt (joints slightly rubbed); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Lady Eleanor Butler (presentation inscription); Chandos, Lord Leigh (bookplate).

Fourth edition. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BYRON on the half-title: "To The Lady E. Butler from the Author." The recipient is almost certainly Lady Eleanor Butler, daughter of the sixteenth Earl of Ormonde, who was then famous because of her living with two other women as a recluse in the Vale of Llangollen, together known as the "Three Ladies of Llangollen." The only other contemporary Lady Eleanor Butler was her niece of the same name, who had been several years married at the time of this book's publication. Chandos, the sixth Lord Leigh, was a schoolmate and lifelong friend of Byron. See also lots 412, 469, 513, and 524-539 for other lots from the James Bieri collection.
