An incomplete copy of the first Latin edition of Sebastian Brant's satirical poem translated by Jacobus Locher. The "stultifera navis" had a strong influence on contemporaries as evidenced by the more than twenty successive editions after the first German edition printed by Bergmann in 1494: "the 'Ship of Fools' was the first original work by a German which passed in world literature "(PMM 37). The famous illustrations are the work of the "Meister der Bergmannschen Offizin" often recognized in the young Albrecht DÃ¼rer and the Haintz-Nar-Meister and Gnad-her-Meister. 8vo (205 x 150mm). Lacking first and last leaves, 136 of 148 (lacking: a1-3, m1 (89), m8 (96), s1 (137), and final leaves s7-t4, widespread stains, occasional holes with some text losst). Leaf 56 with paper/printing flaw and small tear affecting printed area on verso only, leaves 74 and 80 transposed, some light staining, title and some headlines shaved. Provenance: Robert Redgrave? (monogram R.R. and motto 'Otium sine literis mors est' to bookplate). Later edition with the woodcuts from the first edition of 1494. At least 70 of the illustrations are now attributed to Albrecht Dürer. 'The woodcut illustrations created for Das Narrenschiff are of immense density and tenseness. First illustrated edition of this work which was thought for long to be attributed to St Methodius (martyred in 312) and translated by Aytinger, a monk from Augsburg. It is now believed to have been composed in Syriac in the seventh century but only known in its Latin or Greek versions until the twentieth century. It is a book of prophecies, which predicts the ultimate triumph of the Christians over the Turkish infidels and it is one of several apocalyptic texts circulating at the time, and was probably the most widespread. This is the first illustrated edition of this text, which must have been successful as regularly reprinted by Furter using the same blocks. Some of the woodcuts may have been made for other publications, such as Brant's Ship of Fools. 4to (180 x 135mm). Numerous large woodcut illustrations including one on title (title remargined, few small marginal repaired tears, f8 in facsimile, occasional light browning). Modern boards using parts of an early illustrated text. Recenti studi hanno dimostrato che fu invece composta in siriaco nel VII secolo, ma fino al secolo scorso se ne conoscevano solo versioni in latino e greco. Si tratta di un libro di profezie, che tenta di predire la vittoria dei Cristiani sugli infedeli turchi ed Ã¨ uno dei testi apocalittici che circolavano al tempo e probabilmente il maggiormente conosciuto. The work is regarded as the most successful German-language book of pre-Reformation. The late medieval morality satire illustrates the contemporary world with all its vices and peculiarities. The groundbreaking success of this popular literature moved both legitimate published parallel editions, and "pirated" by itself. The woodcuts of the present exemplar by Georg Fuchs are not originated by the young Albrecht Dürer like the other editions but have been especially produced for the pirated copies by an anonymus artist. They are a quite interesting alternative to the well known original woodcuts. Worldwide are only 31 exemplares of the "ship of fools" preseved in libraries, the most of them incomplete, among them also 4 entire books in German libraries. Condition: The book is in very good, age-related condition. The cover is minimally rubbed to the edges and the paper is slightly discolored consitent with age. A few sheet rims have been restored by a specialist respectively show minor loss of material. 3 sheets in facsimile Sebastian Brant (1457-1521) Sebastian Brant was a German lawyer, professor of law at the University of Basel (1489-1500) and from 1502 to his death in 1521 City Counsel and Registrar of the free imperial city of Strasbourg. He was also one of the most prolific writers of Latin devotional poetry. His first published in 1494 in German Narrenschiff established his fame as a writer of German humanism. Die vorliegende Ausgabe verbreitete sich schnell über die Landesgrenzen hinweg und machte Brants Werk zu einem internationalen Erfolg. Die Übersetzung Lochers ist keine wörtliche, sondern eher eine lateinische Nachdichtung, die den Erwartungen des lateinkundigen Publikums und dessen klassischem Bildungshintergrund Rechnung tragen konnte (vgl. Rupp, 2002). – Es fehlen 6 Blätter: n3-6 (S. 197-204) und o2-3 (S. 211-214) mit 3 Textholzschnitten. Blatt k6 mit restauriertem Eckabriss. Stellenweise gering gebräunt, kaum fleckig, Seitenrand etwas knapp beschnitten (minimaler Buchstabenverlust der gedruckten Marginalien). Sauberes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar in einem dekorativen Maroquinband, einige wenige Textholzschnitte etwas flau gedruckt. Mit montiertem Exlibris.

Seltener dritter, mit dem Erstdruck von 1516 bei Matthias Hüpfuff in Straßburg kollationsgleicher Druck von Sebastian Brants Clagspiegel, dem ältesten und umfassendsten Kompendium des römischen Rechts in deutscher Sprache. Der Titelholzschnitt sowie der Textholzschnitt auf Blatt X1 verso, der den zweiten Teil des Werks über das Strafrecht einleitet, zeigen streitende Parteien vor dem Richter. Eine Variante dieser dritten Ausgabe unterscheidet sich lediglich im Kolophon durch ein zweites "n" bei "herrenn" (vgl. VD 16, B 7087). Das schöne Druckersignet am Schluss, das Flach seit 1519 in seiner Offizin verwendete, zeigt einen "wilden Mann" und eine "wilde Frau" unter einem Baum, ein Wappenschild mit seinen Initialen "MF" haltend. - Es fehlt das Blatt A8 mit dem Textholzschnitt verso, der den Kaiser mit den ihn umgebenden Kurfürsten zeigt. The German humanist and author of the Ship of Fools based his edition of Aesop on that printed at Ulm in 1476, highly important not only for its Latin translation by Heinrich Steinhöwel but for its extensive and influential series of woodcuts. Brant included other fable literature which features in later incunable editions, such as the Fabulae Extravagantes (17 fables derived from ancient sources), the 4/5th-century compilation of 42 fables by Avian, and the Fabulae Collectae, short tales about human folly derived from Petrus Alfonsi and Poggio Bracciolini. Brant gives these texts a new treatment, amending their translations and adding his own verse commentary. The second part of Brant's Aesop edition is an entirely new work: 140 chapters of fables, exempla, riddles, contemporary accounts of miracles and wonders of nature, brought together from folk tradition, contemporary reports, and sources reaching back to antiquity. They are told with Brant's characteristic combination of wit and style. Brant's Aesop is a typographic masterpiece. Its unified design presents a woodcut, then verse, then prose. The woodcuts illustrating the Aesop corpus are enlarged, reversed copies of the Ulm series, first used in Wolff's Basel edition of c.1489 (Goff A-115). Brants illustrierte Verssatire auf die menschlichen Narrheiten und Schwächen zählt zu den populärsten Büchern des späten fünfzehnten und frühen sechzehnten Jahrhunderts - das erste deutsche literarische Werk, dessen Ruhm sich rasch in ganz Europa verbreitete, gefördert durch die zahlreichen Übersetzungen. Die zuerst 1497 erschienene lateinische Version des Brant-Schülers Jakob Locher (siehe Katalog-Nummer 729), die unter Mitarbeit des Lehrers entstand, machte das Narrenschiff zum europäischen Erfolg. Für diesen waren neben den Versen vor allem auch die Illustrationen ausschlaggebend. Heute gilt als gesichert, dass der sogenannte "Narrenschiff"-Hauptmeister und "Meister der Bergmannschen Offizin" mit Albrecht Dürer identisch ist. Dürer hat zwei Jahre seiner vierjährigen Wanderzeit in oberrheinischen Städten verbracht. Vom Frühjahr oder Sommer 1492 bis zum Spätsommer oder Frühherbst 1493 hat er sich in Basel aufgehalten. Winkler (S. 12) hat in den unbezeichneten Holzschnitten eine versteckte Signatur entdeckt: die von Dürer stammenden Risse sind mit einer Art Abzeichen an der Narrenkappe versehen: zwischen den Ohren verläuft von vorn nach hinten über die Kappe wie ein Scheitel eine Schellenreihe. Dreiviertel aller Holzschnitte sind von Dürer entworfen und bilden einen Höhepunkt realistischer Illustrationskunst der Frühdruckzeit. - Gegenüber den früheren Ausgaben wurde in der vorliegenden, von den Originalstöcken gedruckten auf die seitlichen Rankenleisten verzichtet. Dadurch entstand ein harmonischeres Verhältnis zwischen den Holzschnitten und der verwendeten Antiqua-Type sowie ein geschlosseneres Gesamtbild. Der erste, der "Titel"-Holzschnitt ist "1491" datiert und hier zeitgenössisch koloriert (Farbe teils etwas verlaufen, durchgebräunt und Blatt in der Darstellung gerissen), unten ein altes hs. "Exlibris D. Wilhelmi Hegers". Der Holzschnitt mit dem Narren als Gelehrten für "In utitiltas libro" (b3) ist ebenfalls koloriert. Ein Blatt (i1) mit winzigem, teils alt hinterlegtem gefüllten Randeinriss, einige zeitgenössische Einträge, hier und da gering fleckig und wenige, kaum sichtbare Wasserränder, zu Anfang und Ende unwesentliche Knickspuren. Insgesamt sehr schönes, vollständiges und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar mit den großartigen Holzschnitten, meist in sehr gratigem, kontrastreichen Abdruck.

Second edition. An unusually crisp, bright and tall copy. The illustrations are from the blocks cut for Pynson's edition of 1509. As Jackson notes, there are just three cuts in the 1509 edition which do not appear in the present one, and these had their places filled by repetition of cuts intended for other chapters. The blocks were not copied directly from the original Basel blocks (engraved by the Master of the Bergman Printing House) but from the Parisian copies made for the French translation of Pierre Rivière. The title woodcut is a copy of Lambert's edition, Paris, 1497. The English translator, Alexander Barclay (?1475-1552), was successively a priest in the college of Ottery St. Mary, Devon, a Benedictine monk at Ely, a Franciscan at Canterbury, and rector of All Hallows, Lombard Street, London.
