Translated into English from Jacob Locher's Latin version by Alexander Barclay (1475?-1552). London: John Cawood, 1570. 2o (258 x 176mm). Black letter, roman and italic type. Single and double column. 118 woodcut illustrations printed from 107 blocks [Hodnett 1824-81, 1883-99, 1901-31]. Woodcut initials and type ornaments. (First two leaves supplied from another copy and with marginal repairs, Aa1-Gg6 slightly short at foremargin and possibly supplied, Xx3 slightly short at foremargin and upper margin, C3 with repaired tear into text, small stain on Nn2v catchword.) Green morocco by Zaehnsdorf, old front flyleaf preserved, spine gilt-lettered, gilt turn-ins. Provenance : early 19th-century bibliographical note on flyleaf, and further short notes on colophon. Second English edition. With one exception, the memorable series of woodblocks were first used in Richard Pynson's edition of 1509 and are, in nearly all cases, 'very well preserved.' While all but seven derive from the first edition of the Narrenschiff (Basel: Johann Bergmann, 1494) [GW 5041], they were not copied directly from the Basel cuts by Drer and others, but from Pierre RiviŠre's French edition, printed in Paris by Jean Lambert, 1497 [GW 5058]. The 'other workes' included in translation by Barclay are Dominicus Mancinus The Mirrour of Good Maners and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini Certayne Egloges.
