  • Mattheus Terwesten, attributed to, Diana and Endymion, Bacchus and Ariadne and a River God and his Consort
    Nov. 16, 2024

Mattheus Terwesten, attributed to, Diana and Endymion, Bacchus and Ariadne and a River God and his Consort

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

We would like to thank Dr. Charles Dumas for indicating these paintings to be the work of the Hague-born painter Mattheus Terwesten. Like his brother Augustin (1649-1711), Mattheus specialised in mythological and allegorical themes, particularly in the field of decorative painting. The depiction of three mythological couples in one picture is unusual. In the center are Diana and the sleeping Endymion, in the left foreground Bacchus and probably Ariadne, while the third couple at the bottom edge of the picture depicts a river god (perhaps Achelous) and his consort (perhaps Sterope).

    Nov. 20, 2023

Matthäus Terwesten (1670–1757) – attributed, Reclining Venus with Putti

    Est: €2,000 - €4,000

Matthäus Terwesten, the younger brother of Augustin Terwesten (1711–1781), who became the Prussian court painter in Berlin, worked in various places, especially in his hometown of The Hague and in Berlin, where his brother decorated palaces with ceiling paintings. . Venus, surrounded by putti, lies bare-breasted in a park on a red, shiny silk cloth. The purple curtain accentuates and shades the goddess. Venus, dressed in a golden robe and blue mantle, reaches into a basket of flowers and looks up at a putto holding the end of a garland of flowers. The other end is held by two putti in the shadow behind Venus. Two putti carry a large basket of flowers, and in front a putti sits on a stone and looks behind. The surroundings are a park, behind Venus you can see shells and fountain sculptures. The theme breathes the spirit of French Rococo. Dimensions 73 x 64 cm, Oil on canvas

PLAFOND-GEMÄLDE MIT SCHWEBENDEN PUTTI UND BLÜTEN INMITTEN EINER BALUSTRADE Öl auf Leinwand. Durchmesser: 284 cm. Ungerahmt. Nr. 2403. MATTHEUS TERWESTEN (attr. a)

    Est: €400 - €600
