Notes

Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen trained in his father's studio and specialised in floral still life painting. At the age of thirteen, he was accepted as a Master of the Antwerp Guild and was elected Dean in 1691. Verbruggen spent most of his life in Antwerp, with the exception of a stay in The Hague from 1706 to 1723, where he met and worked together with Mattheus Terwesten. This pair is one of several collaborations between the two painters. Other paintings of the same subject can be found in the oeuvre of Verbruggen, amongst which a signed pair, similar in many aspects and also most probably painted in collaboration with Terwesten, was sold, Paris, Perrin-Royere-La Jeunesse-Vergez-Honta, 15 November 1998, lot 38.υ1

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Terwesten for the figures on the basis of photographs.
