Athletic male nude, swinging his sword. Height circa 72 cm. Franz von Stuck, one of the most famous Munich painters of his time, created this sculpture in the early 20th century to give shape to the fears of the German nation at the beginning of World War I. In the Third Reich, this bronze from the possessions of the artist's only daughter was obviously given to Adolf Hitler as a present for his 44th birthday. Albert Heilmann, Franz von Stuck's son-in-law, worked in his father's construction business (Heilmann & Littmann). Among others, they built the famous Schackgalerie, the Prinzregententheater and the Hofbräuhaus in Munich.

Oil on paper. Laid on wood. 27,5 x 25cm. Framed. Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany. Literature: Voss, Heinrich: Franz von Stuck. Werkkatalog der Gemälde mit einer Einführung in seinen Symbolismus. München 1973, S. 137, listed here under the number Nr, 174/606. Beginning in 1892 as a founding member of the Munich Secession Franz von Stuck belonged to the Avant-garde artists not only in Munich but throughout the entire German Reich. He, the son of a milling master, was the head of the painting class at the Academy (1895). In 1905 he was finally ennobled as painter prince at the head of the Munich Artists. This prominent position is also evident in the present work, a self-portrait with his wife Mary, dressed as the divine couple Zeus and Hera. In 1898 he took part in the tradition of artists in a legendary celebration under the motto "In Arcadia". Amoung the initiators in addition to the painters Lenbach and Kaulbach was Franz von Stuck.
