Item Overview

Description

KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH - Franz von Stuck (1863 - 1928) - "Enemies all around us!"
Patinated bronze, the plinth with artist's signature "Franz von Stuck" on top and caster's stamp "Guss C. Leyrer München" as well as engraved dedications (tr.) "To the fighter for Germany's honour, greatness and freedom" and "Dedicated 20 April 1933 / Albert and Mary Heilmann-Stuck" on the side. Athletic male nude, swinging his sword. Height circa 72 cm. Franz von Stuck, one of the most famous Munich painters of his time, created this sculpture in the early 20th century to give shape to the fears of the German nation at the beginning of World War I. In the Third Reich, this bronze from the possessions of the artist's only daughter was obviously given to Adolf Hitler as a present for his 44th birthday. Albert Heilmann, Franz von Stuck's son-in-law, worked in his father's construction business (Heilmann & Littmann). Among others, they built the famous Schackgalerie, the Prinzregententheater and the Hofbräuhaus in Munich.
