Beginning in 1892 as a founding member of the Munich Secession Franz von Stuck belonged to the Avant-garde artists not only in Munich but throughout the entire German Reich. He, the son of a milling master, was the head of the painting class at the Academy
(1895). In 1905 he was finally ennobled as painter prince at the head of the Munich
Artists. This prominent position is also evident in the present work, a self-portrait with his wife Mary, dressed as the divine couple Zeus and Hera. In 1898 he took part in the tradition of artists in a legendary celebration under the motto "In Arcadia". Amoung the initiators in addition to the painters Lenbach and Kaulbach was Franz von Stuck.
