Halbfigur eines ahnungsvoll schauenden Zivilisten mit Adolf Hitler ähnelnden Gesichtszügen gekleidet in Hut und Mantel. Unter Glas in altem teilweise vergoldetem Rahmen. Stockflecken Altersspuren. Bildmaße ca. 44 x 32 cm Rahmenmaße ca. 57 x 45 5 cm. Sauter stellte 1938 - 1944 auf der Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellung aus.     KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH Wilhelm Sauter (1896 - 1948) - Front Soldier Oil tempera on hard board signed and dated on the lower right W. Sauter 1938. Head and shoulders portrait of a German front soldier of the First World War in field uniform with camouflage coloured M 16 helmet. In old silver-plated frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Dimensions circa 55 x 43 cm with frame circa 72 x 60 cm. Excellently executed psychologically subtle study of a soldier's face which silently and intensely reflects the human suffering of the war. Wilhelm Sauter fought himself in the First World War which makes this and his other soldier portraits very authentic. Especially these pictures by Sauter struck a cord in the public's mind and were displayed between 1938 and 44 at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich.     KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH Wilhelm Sauter (1896 - 1948) - Western Front 1940 Oil tempera on hard board signed and dated on the lower right W. Sauter 1941 the reverse with old handwritten artist's signature location Karlsruhe and name of the painting Western Front 1940. Four infantrymen in summer uniform scathed by the battle and with heroic looks on their faces standing in front of a bunker. In original perfectly matching silver plated frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Painting measurements circa 72 x 52 cm dimensions of the frame circa 85 x 65 cm. The painter and illustrator Wilhelm Sauter faught in the First World War and became a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in 1941. Experts especially value his soldier paintings which reflect his own experiences and which were presented at the Great German Art Exhibitions between 1938 and 1944. The painting Western Front 1940 was shown in an extended version at the 1941 exhibition. Adolf Hitler is said to have been the owner (literary reference included). A destroyed landscape at the Western Front after the Battle of the Somme 1916 a pool of water and barb wire in front of a fortified camp and destroyed civilian buildings. In original silver-plated and glazed painted frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Dimensions circa 64 x 105 cm with frame circa 73 x 114.5 cm. With original label of this picture from the Great German Art Exhibition 1942. Wilhelm Sauter took part in the Battle of the Somme and depicts in this expressive painting his own experiences on death and destruction.
