KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH Wilhelm Sauter (1896 - 1948) - Western Front 1940 Oil tempera on hard board signed and dated on the lower right W. Sauter 1941 the reverse with old handwritten artist's signature location Karlsruhe and name of the painting Western Front 1940. Four infantrymen in summer uniform scathed by the battle and with heroic looks on their faces standing in front of a bunker. In original perfectly matching silver plated frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Painting measurements circa 72 x 52 cm dimensions of the frame circa 85 x 65 cm. The painter and illustrator Wilhelm Sauter faught in the First World War and became a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in 1941. Experts especially value his soldier paintings which reflect his own experiences and which were presented at the Great German Art Exhibitions between 1938 and 1944. The painting Western Front 1940 was shown in an extended version at the 1941 exhibition. Adolf Hitler is said to have been the owner (literary reference included).
