KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH Wilhelm Sauter (1896 - 1948) - Front Soldier Oil tempera on hard board signed and dated on the lower right W. Sauter 1938. Head and shoulders portrait of a German front soldier of the First World War in field uniform with camouflage coloured M 16 helmet. In old silver-plated frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Dimensions circa 55 x 43 cm with frame circa 72 x 60 cm. Excellently executed psychologically subtle study of a soldier's face which silently and intensely reflects the human suffering of the war. Wilhelm Sauter fought himself in the First World War which makes this and his other soldier portraits very authentic. Especially these pictures by Sauter struck a cord in the public's mind and were displayed between 1938 and 44 at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich.
