KUNST IM DRITTEN REICH Wilhelm Sauter (1896 - 1948) - Serre (Somme) 1916 Oil tempera on wood signed on the lower right W. Sauter (circa 1942) old inscription with title of the painting and artist's name at the reverse. A destroyed landscape at the Western Front after the Battle of the Somme 1916 a pool of water and barb wire in front of a fortified camp and destroyed civilian buildings. In original silver-plated and glazed painted frame (slightly bumped). Signs of age. Dimensions circa 64 x 105 cm with frame circa 73 x 114.5 cm. With original label of this picture from the Great German Art Exhibition 1942. Wilhelm Sauter took part in the Battle of the Somme and depicts in this expressive painting his own experiences on death and destruction.
