He is commonly associated with his time in Denmark he served as Director of the Royal Danish Academy of Art (1754–71). His most noteworthy work is the equestrian statue Frederik V on Horseback at Amalienborg.

J. Saly, allievo di G. Cousteau, completò la sua formazione a Roma. Durante il suo soggiorno italiano dal 1740 al 1748 divenne membro dell'accademia dell'Arcadia a Roma e di quelle di Firenze e Bologna. Tornato in patria verso il 1750 realizza una delle opere più fortunate e replicate del XVIII secolo. Il busto di una bambina con le trecce dal viso imbronciato chiamata appunto "La Boudeuse" oggi conservata al Musee du Louvre, altezza cm 47, su base in marmo grigio

SALY, Jacques François (1717-1776). Vasa inventa atque studii causa delin. et incise. N.p. [Rome?], 1746. 2o (406 x 267 mm). Allegorical title-page designed and etched by Saly, signed and dated 1746 in the plate, and 30 etched plates of vases by Saly, each signed in the plate. Contemporary Italian vellum gilt. Provenance: acquired from Paul Jammes, 1982. FIRST EDITION, on large and thick paper, of one of the most beautiful vase books of the 18th century. The originality and vitality of Saly's designs, mixed with the occasional touch of sardonic humor, made them favorite copying models for students, were more influential than similar works by any of his contemporaries. It was published while Saly was a student at the Académie de Rome (1740-1748) and eight years after he won the Prix de Rome. Saly returned to France in 1750 to join the Académie Royale and briefly served as royal sculptor (Sculpteur du Roi) to King Louis XV. He was the first sculptor to receive the Order of Saint Michel and is considered one of the most original artisans of his time. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only one other complete set has sold at auction over the past 35 years.
