Description

SALY, Jacques Francois (1717-1776). Vasa. A. Se. Inventa Atq. [Paris]: Iacobus Saly, 1746. 2° (360 x 240mm). Watermark cf. Headwood 1638, allegorical title page, signed and dated 1746, and 30 numbered plates, designed and engraved by the author, EXTRA ILLUSTRATED with 2 plates from Saly's Monuments funéraires, later pencil numbering at upper margins, 'fin' on final verso (light spotting and browning and most plates with 2 dots of old adhesive.) 19th-century half blue sheep (somewhat worn).

Saly drew this series of ornamental vases at the Académie de France in Rome and his engravings were influential in forming Neoclassical taste. He became later 'Sculpteur de Roi' and was the most original sculptors of his times. Berlin Kat. 1064; Brunet V, 103.
