The Yellow Kid by Richard Outcault Wood Panel

            Est: $100 - $200

Carved figural wood plaque of THE YELLOWÊKID.ÊThe Yellow Kid was the first comic character and was created by famous cartoonist Richard Outcault. Measuring approx 9.25" x 4" wide. Novelty item from possibly the Cartoon Art Hall of Fame. See photos.ÊProvenance: Private Nashville TN estate. The Yellow Kid by Richard Felton Outcault (1863-1928) is generally held to be the character that gave birth to American comic strips. The Kid, later named Mickey Dugan by Outcault, was a smallish figure dressed in a nightshirt who roamed the streets of New YorkÊin company with other urchins. The Yellow Kid was not a Comic strip,Êrather he appeared as a character in a series of large single panel color comic illustrations in the New YorkÊWorldÊwith the more or less continuous running titleÊHogan's Alley.ÊTheÊWorldÊpublished the first of these illustrations,ÊAt the Circus in Hogan's Alley,Êon May 5, 1895. The newspaper's readers, it seems, singled out the Kid as a distinctive character and his popularity led other artists to create similar characters. In short succession these actions gave rise to the comic strip. Outcault was born in Lancaster, Ohio and studied design in Cincinnati before joining the laboratories of Thomas Edison as an illustrator in 1888. By 1890 Outcault combined employment as an illustrator on theÊElectrical World,Êa trade journal, with freelance cartoon work for illustrated humor journals such asÊPuck, Judge, Life,ÊandÊTruth.ÊThe Kid's genesis lay in the genre of city urchin cartoons made popular by these journals. In particular Outcault drew inspiration from Michael Angelo Woolf's work.

Outcault, Richard Felton. Be it ever so humble ...

Condition A-: minor tears at edges; minor creases in margins and image; light time-staining in upper right corner. Paper. The Yellow Kid was one of the earliest, and certainly the most popular of all early American comic characters. At its heart was social commentary about New York, presented in a humorous and irreverent manner. The New York World newspaper, owned by Joseph Pulitzer, was among the first to print in color and to run comics. On May 5th, 1895, Outcault ran the first strip featuring The Yellow Kid, called Hogan's Alley. Such was the success of his character with the public, that one year later, William Randolph Hearst poached Outcault to come work for his newspaper, The New York Journal. Here, The Yellow Kid is out for a sleigh ride of sorts through Madison Square Park - the second Madison Square Garden, with Augustus Saint Gaudens' Statue of Diana visible rising above the trees in the background. This short-lived spin-off of "Buster Brown" recorded the innocent scrapes of a little messenger boy and his friend Botts the Bear. Outcault licensed the character as he did the Yellow Kid and Buster Brown, so there were Buddy Tucker boots, suits, crockery and other merchandise. He was never as popular as the other two characters, so when the readership lagged, Outcault introduced Buddy to Alice in Wonderland who took him on storybook adventures such as visiting Randolph Caldecott's The House that Jack Built . Reprinted in Buddy Tucker and His Friends (New York: Cupples & Leon, 1906.)

Provenance : Alfred B. Hunt. This and the following two drawings record events on Buster's visit to his Aunt Emeline and Uncle Jack's estate in Lenox, Mass. R.F. Outcault invented the American comic strip during the New York newspaper wars of the 1890s. While Joseph Pulitzer was battling with William Randolph Hearst for the supremacy of the World over the Journal , Outcault introduced a single panel strip set in Hogan's Alley in Pulitzer's Sunday supplement in 1895. The World's printer decided to use a new yellow ink on the night shirt of one of the slum urchins and "The Yellow Kid" was born. His weekly sardonic messages scrawled on the nightshirt grew so popular that the next year Hearst hired Outcault out from under Pulitzer to draw "The Yellow Kid" for him. Then Pulitzer had staff artist George Luks draw another "The Yellow Kid," and from this competition arose the term "yellow journalism" to describe any sensational journalism like that practiced by both Pulitzer and Hearst. Outcault retired "The Yellow Kid" when he moved over to the more genteel New York Herald . He now introduced a little middle class boy named Buster Brown and his dog Tige. Based in part on the cartoonist's own son, Buster got into all sorts of mischief every week and always got paddled by his Ma just before the final panel. The strip had no greater fan than young Vladimir Nabokov: "Every episode ended in a tremendous spanking for Buster, which was administered by his wasp-waisted but powerful Ma, who used a slipper, a hairbrush, a brittle umbrella, anything—even the bludgeon of a helpful policeman—and drew puffs of dust from the seat of his pants. As I had never experienced corporal punishment in any form whatsoever, those pictures conveyed to me the impression of strange, exotic tortures, no different from, say, the burying of a trussed live criminal up to his chin in torrid desert sand." A brilliant self-promoter, Outcault licensed Buster and Tige for all sorts of products, the most enduring being Buster Brown Shoes.

Condition B / B-: tears, losses and staining at edges, some affecting image; creases and abrasions in margins and image; vertical fold. Paper. The Yellow Kid was one of the earliest, and certainly the most popular of all early American comic characters. At its heart was social commentary about New York, presented in a humorous and irreverent manner. The New York World newspaper, owned by Joseph Pulitzer, was among the first to print in color and to run comics, and on May 5th, 1895, Outcault ran the first strip featuring The Yellow Kid, called "Hogan's Alley." Such was the success of his character with the public that one year later William Randolph Hearst poached Outcault to come work for his newspaper, The New York Journal. Here, The Yellow Kid is out for a sleigh ride of sorts through Madison Square Park - the second Madison Square Garden, with Augustus Saint Gaudens' Statue of Diana visible rising above the trees in the background. The issue being advertised is Sunday, January 31, 1897, which featured a "Hogan's Alley" comic entitled "Mickey and His Friends Hobnob with Royalty" (Mickey Dugan was The Yellow Kid's real name). rare/span

In fact, for these two reasons, his creator, Richard Felton Outcault is generally credited with permanently establishing the comic strip and making it a part of American society. The Yellow Kid was a bald, snaggletoothed child with a goofy grin in a yellow nightshirt – a hand-me-down from his sister – who hung around in a ghetto alley filled with equally odd characters, mostly other children. The kid habitually spoke in a ragged, peculiar slum argot printed on his shirt, a device meant to lampoon advertising billboards of the day. The Kid's head was drawn wholly shaved as if having been recently ridden of lice. Here, he is being used to promote High Admiral cigarettes in this in-store display.

New York Sunday Journal/The Yellow Kid. RICHARD FELTON OUTCAULT (1863-1928) H.A. Thomas & Wylie, N.Y. Cond A-/Slight tears at edges/P. Hully Gee! Who was the Yellow Kid? Quite simply the first successful comic strip character to achieve a popularity that not only increased the sales of newspapers carrying him, but also the first to demonstrate that a comic strip character could be merchandised profitably. In fact, for these two reasons, his creator, Richard Felton Outcault (1863-1928), is generally credited with permanently establishing the comic strip and making it a part of American society. The Yellow Kid was a bald, snaggletoothed child with a goofy grin in a yellow nightshirt-a hand me down from his sister-who hung around in a ghetto alley filled with equally odd characters, mostly other children-most of which can be seen in this poster for the New York Sunday Journal. The kid habitually spoke in a ragged, peculiar slum argot printed on his shirt, a device meant to lampoon advertising billboards of the day. The Kid's head was drawn wholly shaved as if having been recently ridden of lice-a common sight among New York's tenement ghetto children during the period. Around the World with the Yellow Kid-one of three strip series produced by Outcault between 1896 and 1898 (none of which lasted more than four months)-sent The Kid on a world tour in the manner of famed American journalist, Nellie Bly. That strip is hilariously promoted in this Outcault-inspired design, both in its cast of characters (from The Kid and his pals to Queen Victoria, Kaiser Wilhelm II and their cronies) to its not-so-subtle commentary ("Say wont we nock yoorop silly"). Outcault would go on to create another comic strip character that became an even-better known and enduring promotional icon-Buster Brown. 1897 20 x 15 in./51 x 38 cm
