Item Overview

Description

Original illustration, pen and ink and watercolor on stiff paper, 13 ¾ x 9 inches, signed ("R.F. Outcault"), May 12, 1907, featuring the Yellow Kid holding up a glass, matted, some slight fading to red, mount residue on verso.

The Yellow Kid first appeared in the Outcault-penned Hogan's Alley cartoon about a group of New York City tenement children. It was one of the earliest cartoons to run in a weekly Sunday color supplement. The character occasionally appeared in Outcault's later strips, including Buster Brown. This example with the character's yellow nightshirt inscribed: "Well hully gee. Here's to you." and then below: "I drew this picture just for you / and it's the best that I can do / Sincerely yours."
Provenance: From the collection of M.B. Goldstone.
