Item Overview

Description

"Buddy Tucker," pen and ink with blue pencil on Bristol board in 3 pieces, 380 x 534 mm, signed "RF Outcault" lower right, soiled. Published : Half-page cartoon for the "Comic Section," The New York Herald , May 14, 1905. Provenance : Alfred B. Hunt. This short-lived spin-off of "Buster Brown" recorded the innocent scrapes of a little messenger boy and his friend Botts the Bear. Outcault licensed the character as he did the Yellow Kid and Buster Brown, so there were Buddy Tucker boots, suits, crockery and other merchandise. He was never as popular as the other two characters, so when the readership lagged, Outcault introduced Buddy to Alice in Wonderland who took him on storybook adventures such as visiting Randolph Caldecott's The House that Jack Built . Reprinted in Buddy Tucker and His Friends (New York: Cupples & Leon, 1906.)
