Nous estudis sobre el patrimoni artístic de Catalunya als segles XIX i XX, Barcelona 2017, pp. 216–217, fig. 17 We are grateful to Till-Holger Borchert for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original and for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. The present work is a refined and highly detailed example of Early Netherlandish painting, most likely created in Bruges during the final two decades of the artist’s career, probably for the Iberian market. The composition particularly relates to a comparable work by the master, which depicts the Virgin and Child in a niche, conserved in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid (see M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, Leiden 1974, vol. XI, p. 87, no. 174a, plate 132). Having collaborated with the prominent Bruges painter Gérard David and his workshop, as well as with Ambrosius Benson, Isenbrant regularly drew upon David’s designs for his own compositions, as is evidenced by the figures of the Virgin and Child in the present work, who relate to those in David’s Rest on the Flight into Egypt, conserved in the Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P002643). Isenbrant probably had access to workshop drawings by David or copies thereof which probably were perforated to allow an easy transfer, as Isenbrant’s figures are seen in reverse compared to those by David in the Prado. On the Virgin’s right, kneels Bernard de Fontaine (circa 1090–1153), known as Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Born into a noble family in Burgundy, Bernard joined the Cistercian order after the death of his mother and is widely known as the founder of the Abbey after which the saint is named. A staunch defender of the Crusades, Bernard played a key role in the spread of the Cistercian order across Europe, bringing it to the forefront of religious influence. Bernard of Clairvaux was canonised in 1174 by Pope Alexander III. Adriaen Isenbrant registered as a free master in the Bruges Guild of painters in November 1510, for which he served nine times as deacon and twice as governor of the Guild. He worked on commission and also produced works for the nascent art markets in Bruges and Antwerp, working for agents who exported his works. In 1520, the City of Bruges commissioned him alongside leading artists in the town to paint the decorations for the triumphal entry of Charles V. Isenbrant ran a productive workshop, and his paintings recall works by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and Gérard David, as well as Jan Gossaert and Albrecht Dürer. With David, he was among the first painters in Bruges who used the Leonardesque sfumato for faces and flesh parts, as evident in the present work which also show the typical warm colours preferred by the master. Technical analysis by Gianluca Poldi The support is an oak panel, 1cm maximum thickness, later painted with a dark pigment on the back. It was thinned at the verso along all the four sides, probably since the beginning, to be inserted in its frame, coherently with the unpainted edges at the recto, indicating the painting still preserves its original size. The underlying drawing revealed by IR reflectography is noteworthy: it is not the result of tracing but is done freehand with a black chalk, tracing the contours and in various cases – as in the hands – correcting them in search of the best shape. The outline underdrawing is followed by hatching, to study and place the shadows. The direction of the hatching is typical of a right-handed painter. A necklace (probably a rosary), just sketched, was slipped into the saint’s right wrist, but was not painted. The elaborate drawing that can be found under the figures becomes simpler, linear, under the architecture, and is limited to the incisions in the floor tiles placed in perspective, while it disappears under the landscape, most likely executed directly in painting. Non-invasive pigment analyses, carried out by means of reflectance spectroscopy, allowed to detect azurite – mixed with lead white – in the sky and in the bluish landscape towards the horizon, progressively changing to verdigris (copper acetate) coming closer to the figures, in the trees and meadows, where a flock of sheep grazes, painted with the tip of the brush like a miniature, watched over by a shepherd who leans against the trunk of the tree. A coccid-derived red lake is used in the Virgin’s cloak, while vermillion is mixed with lead white to create the flesh tones, according to tradition. Both these kinds of red are present in the floor tiles. The painter’s skills in making small details realistic are particularly evident in the architecture, with their sculpted elements, including a prophet (top left), highlighted with lead-tin yellow and lead white over the brown underlayers. In addition to the simulation, in these areas, of the golden reflections of light, the painter uses gold itself, shell gold, to create the rich halos of the three figures.

A portrait of Saint Mary Magdalene by Adriaen Isenbrant. In a Dutch 17th century ebony frame. Notre tableau était attribué jusqu'à ce jour au Maître des demi-figures, un peintre "maniériste anversois" au style aisément identifiable, à qui l'on doit de nombreuses représentations de Marie-Madeleine à mi-corps (Expertise par G. Delestre et P. de Bayser en date du 29 octobre 1949). Cependant, le style pictural tout en courbes et ondulations, souvent un peu « sec », du maître des demi-figures, ne correspond pas à la force, à la géométrisation par masses ni à la douceur que l'on observe ici. On perçoit l'influence de Gérard David et de Jan Provost dans le rendu des détails, ce qui situe notre tableau à Bruges et non à Anvers, alors que l'ampleur spatiale est influencée par les portraits de la Haute-Renaissance du début du XVIe siècle (Léonard de Vinci, Raphaël). On rapprochera le visage des modèles féminins dans le volet gauche du diptyque Van de Velde d'Isembrant (Bruxelles, musée royaux des beaux-arts) et du Portrait d'une dame avec un chien de l'ancienne collection Thyssen-Bornemisza du même artiste (vente Christie's à Londres, 4 juillet 2019, lot n°1), faisant de notre tableau plus un portrait sous les traits de Marie Madeleine qu'une simple représentation de la sainte. Im Zentrum, in weiter Landschaft, der vor einem Kruzifix, das an einem Baum befestigt ist, kniende Heilige Hieronymus in einem türkisfarbenen Gewand, den Blick ehrfürchtig auf den Corpus Christi am Kreuz gerichtet. Dargestellt sind auch die typischen Attribute des Heiligen: auf der linken Seite der Löwe, dem er nach der Legende einen Stachel aus der Pfote gezogen hat und der bei ihm geblieben ist; dann das Kreuz, auf das er blickt und schließlich sein Kardinalsmantel und -hut, die rechts hinter ihm über Ästen hängen. In seiner rechten Hand hält er einen Stein, mit dem er sich als Zeichen der Buße auf die Brust schlägt. Im Hintergrund eine idyllische Landschaft mit Häusern am Ufer eines Flusses und ein ansteigendes Gebirge unter hohem hellblauem Himmel. Die Darstellung des knienden Hieronymus ist ein in der Kunstgeschichte beliebtes Motiv, das sich bei Künstlern wie Michele Tosini di Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1503-1577), Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) und bei Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) wiederfindet. Der Künstler bevorzugt, laut Ertz, wie bei seinen meist christlichen Themen, insgesamt warme Farben mit einem leuchtenden Rot, hier am Beispiel der Kardinalstracht. The present painting is to be regarded as a fragment of a larger composition, executed in Adriaen Isenbrandt's workshop. The still unknown apprentice probably took Isenbrandt's Descent from the Cross as his model, which is in Oxford at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology (oil on wood, 37 x 28 cm). In the Oxford painting, St. John the Evangelist, the Holy Mother of God and Mary Magdalene, holding Christ's left arm, crowd around the figure of Christ. In our fragment the only partly visible arm of Christ is raised: It indicates the missing figure of Magdalene. We are grateful to Guido de Werd, Cologne, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph. The painting on offer sale in this lot is a high quality copy of the right altar wing, probably in original dimensions, of the diptych altar at the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk) in Bruges. The original right panel is held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. Our Lady of Sorrows is depicted seated on throne, dressed in a dark cloak with a white headscarf and surrounded by individual depictions of the seven sorrows, each separated by painted frames.

      - ISENBRANT, Adriaen (South Netherlandish c. 1485 - 1551) - attr. to. In the garden of Gethsemane, probably 16th century. Oil on oak panel, with a stamp 'PARIS BODAES [or BOBADE] CENTRAL' (on the reverse, faded); nicely framed in contemp. decorated frame (some unobtrusive wormholes and small chips along the edges, else good) with a later name plate reading 'Goswin van der Weyden' (earlier attribution). Panel restored and revarnished in the 20th century, small scratch in the lower left corner, else good. Both panel and frame examined by BAAC cultural history research agency (’s-Hertogenbosch) in 2016 (full dendrological research report added).

      Adrian Isenbrandt, ca. 1490 - 1551, Umkreis des CHRISTUS AM KREUZ Öl auf Eichenholz. 54 x 40 cm. Der Kreuzstamm im unteren Teil als runder Baumstamm gestaltet, nach oben hin abgeflacht. Der Corpus Christi im Dreinageltypus wiedergegeben, mit nach rechts auswehendem Lendentuch und gesenktem Haupt vor dunklem, nächtlichem Wolkenhimmel, den einige Lichtstreifen durchziehen. Links steht Maria in blauem Mantel mit überkreuzten Armen, den Blick nach oben gerichtet, rechts der Heilige Johannes mit gesenktem Haupt und gefalteten Händen. Am Fuß des Kreuzstammes der Schädel Adams, im Hintergrund nahezu gespenstische Beleuchtung, die Stadt Jerusalem mit zahlreichen, in zartem Weiß aufleuchtenden Gebäuden und dem mit Kuppel überfangenen Tempel. Am linken Bildrand miniaturhaft wiedergegeben einige Personen, die der Stadt zulaufen. Das Gemälde von hoher farblicher Delikatesse. Thematisch wird hier die Einsamkeit der in Trauer am Kreuz Verbliebenen dargestellt. Rest. Schwundriss mit mehreren Befestigungs-Parkettierklötzen verso. (930245)
