Lot 8: CIRCLE OF ADRIAEN ISENBRANT

CIRCLE OF ADRIAEN ISENBRANT THE VIRGIN AND CHILD oil on panel 25 by 22 cm.; 9 7/8 by 8 5/8 in.

This is one of several versions of a design that seems to have predominantly circulated in Bruges and which was widely used by, amongst others, Adriaen Isenbrandt. Friedländer lists two versions which he attributes to this latter, one formerly in the Von Pannwitz collection and the other is in Zaragoza, Provincial Museum (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Paintings, vol. XI, Leiden 1974, p. 89, nos. 190 & 190a, both reproduced plate 140).
