Ruby Solitaire Necklaces

As much as it is a statement-maker, a ruby solitaire pendant also brings with it a captivating history. Its name stems from the Latin “ruber,” or red, and the gem has played a role throughout human existence.

From references in the Bible to the writings of famed ancient Roman Pliny, the ruby has since been synonymous with wealth, wisdom, and beauty. The ancient cultures of Myanmar, a land renowned for rubies, thought the fiery red stones could impart invincibility.

One glance at a ruby, however, and it is clear why our ancestors were so enthralled: the ruby’s radiance is rarely rivaled. Ranging in shades from a deep blood red to a brighter pink, all rubies share an inner fire that is unmistakable and utterly compelling.

Quick Facts

  • Rubies are one of the hardest gemstones. Second only to diamonds in strength, rubies measure a 9 on the Mohs scale, the standard scale for determining the hardness of a mineral
  • Some rubies include an inner crystal structure that reveals, when cut as a cabochon, an ethereal star-like shape on the surface of the stone when illuminated
  • Rubies that bear these stars, known as asterisms, are known as star rubies and are considered relatively rare. Even more rare is the double, or twelve-point, star ruby
