Diamond Cross Necklaces

There is nothing as brilliant as the unmistakable sparkle of diamonds, particularly when they accent the delicate geometry of a cross pendant. Diamond cross necklaces are a tasteful take on the classic symbol that is steeped in history and made all the more luxurious with gathered gemstones.

Taking on a wide variety of connotations, from faith-based to folklore, the symbol of the cross has appeared in decorations derived as early as the ancient world. While different cultures modified the design to fit their individual needs, the cross shape nevertheless remained an unmistakable sign of good will.

Following the discovery of diamonds around the 1st millennium B.C., the gemstones became immediately revered and thus incorporated into the most elegant and expensive jewelry designs for the aristocratic classes. It was within these upper ranks that the diamond cross necklace became popular, as it reflected both ones status and ones beliefs. Just as past generations became enthralled with the sparkle of diamonds on such a significant symbol as the cross, so too do wearers today.

Quick Facts

  • Diamonds get their name from the Greek word “adamas,” which translates to “unconquerable,” a testament to the stone’s hardness
  • One of the most striking diamond crosses ever made was one included in a collection of cross charms created for the Duchess of Windsor by Cartier. Between 1934-1944, the Duchess had Cartier craft a total of nine crosses to commemorate significant life events, and she wore each attached to a diamond link bracelet strand. The Duchess’ cross bracelet sold at a Sotheby’s auction in 2010 for just over $930,000 (in today’s dollars)
  • Though diamonds are mined around the world, less than a quarter of them are considered gemstone quality
