WILLI ZIELKE (1902–1989) | 'Eurhythmics' for Leni Riefenstahl's film 'Olympia I, Festival of Nations', 1937 Image Size: 22,5 x 27,9 cm English: Vintage silver print on double-weight glossy paper 24 x 29,2 cm, in very good condition. In the lower negative "Olympia Film G.m.b.H.", film title "Olympia I, Fest der Völker", production company logo "Tobis" and image number "J 12/36", in the upper image blindstamp "Filmprüfstelle Zugelassen" with heraldic eagle of Nazi-Germany. LITERATURE Leni Riefenstahl, Schönheit im Olympischen Kampf, Deutscher Verlag Berlin 1937, pl. 30 (titled). Willy Zielke was the director, photographer and camera man of the so-called "prologue" in the first of Leni Riefenstahl's two Olympic films (whose co-operation the dominant filmmaker later preferred to conceal). Images of athletes in various disciplines against the backdrop of ancient temples on the Acropolis are followed by a group of naked dancers, beginning with the hoop-dancer depicted in this film still. The print is in unusually good condition and shows both the movement and the dramatic lighting of the scene. * Vollbesteuert

Zielke, Willy: Documentation album of the film "Die Wahrheit" (The Truth)

        Est: €4,500 - €5,000

Documentation album of the film "Die Wahrheit" (The Truth), written, directed and photographed by Willy Zielke. 1933/34. 77 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 17 x 12 cm and 12 x 17 cm. Mounted 1 to an album page back and front, bound in contemporary canvas album (some foxing on front cover, a few smudge marks, some album boards cracked and loose) with handwritten title Wahrheit, ein film in black paint. This album is an exceptional piece of cinematic history, as well as a comprehensive documentaion of Willy Zielke's work in film. It was most probably compiled by Zielke himself and shows the genius and passion this director, cameraman and photographer had regarding his work. The album contains dynamic images of film scenes, close-ups as well as images of industrial objects. It primarily documents the shooting of Zielke's socially critical film "Arbeitslos - Ein Schicksal von Millionen" (1933). Under the pressure of the National Socialists Zielke had to cut out parts of the film and change its structure. The new title was "Wahrheit" and since the film was not political enough for propaganda purposes Zielke was forced to change the film to present National Socialism as being the answer to the worldwide economic crisis. The dynamic images in this album are testimony to why Leni Riefenstahl saw Zielke as a rival who she used to advance her own career, successfully working towards pushing him out of the film business. – Some photos with oxidation mirroring in edges or in dark areas, some with surface scuff marks, otherwise most rich, tonal prints in very good condition.
