Oil on canvas Konstantin Semenovic Vysotskij (1864-1938) – Russian landscape and animal painter Signed in Cyrillic ‘K. Vysotskij’ lower right Dimensions: 42 x 61 cm Mounted in parcel-gilt profile frame: 47.5 x 66.5 cm Provenance: Private property, Russia (directly from the artist) An atmospheric forest view in the impressionist manner Condition: The canvas is a bit wavy and shows thinning in part. The paint surface shows significant craquelure and abrasion as well as paint losses. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame is slightly chipped. Konstantin Semenovic Vysotskij (1864-1938) From 1885 to 1891, Konstantin Semenovic Vysotskij studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Vladimir Makovsky and E. Sorokin. Already during his studies, he was awarded two silver medals. He worked as an illustrator for various magazines and illustrated several books. Beginning in 1895, Vysotskij participated in numerous exhibitions. In 1918 he emigrated to Latvia, where he worked as a teacher and freelance artist. In the 1920s and 30s, his work was shown in a number of solo exhibitions in the Riga City Museum. In addition, the artist took part in group exhibitions in Berlin, London, Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Los Angeles. Vysotskij’s oeuvre comprises mainly genre scenes and idyllic landscapes with animals. Oil on hardboard Konstantin Semenovič Vysotskij (1864-1938) – Russian painter Signed lower right scarcely readable Total dimensions, framed: 34 x 55 cm (height x width) Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 3,000 Euro This oil painting was created around 1928 by Konstantin Semenovič Vysotskij. The depiction in moderate colors shows a wood glade with a capecaillie. In the background it shows a forest in late fall. The painting is signed scarcely readable lower right. Picture and frame are in good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. On the reverse it has an adhesive label of an exhibition in February 1929 in Copenhagen. A simply dressed woman with white headscarf is rendered in the center of the image. The shepherdess smilingly looks at the viewer. In the foreground a couple of goats are grazing. With fine brush strokes and delicate dabs of color, the Russian artist has created a lively spring composition in harmonious colors. The field flowers are hinted at with colorful accents in yellow, red and blue. Landscape scenes of this kind are typical of Vysotskij's oeuvre. The artist was fascinated by Latvia's wild nature, which he captured his work time and time again. The painting is overall in very good condition. There is slight craquelure as well as scattered spots of retouching in along the edges and inside the image. The work is signed 'K. Vysotskij' in Cyrillic and dated '1928' lower right. The frame shows some abrasions. The framed work measures 83 x 73 cm, the stretcher frame measures 78 x 67 cm.
