Notes

A student of Vladimir Makovsky, Vystosky initially began his career focusing on historical subjects, turning only later to compositions on the theme of hunting, village and provincial life. Widely published during his lifetime, Vysotsky's sketches illustrated numerous hunting publications as well as tales by Alexander Pushkin. His paintings were shown as part of the Wanderers' travelling exhibition among others. From 1918 onwards, Vysotsky settled in Latvia, mounting a series of solo exhibitions in the Riga Museum of Fine Art during the 1920s and 30s.

The offered work is believed to date to the artist's pre-emigration period.
