James Tower (1919-1988), a tall stylised cat Incised and dated Tower 1952 to base with other faint inscriptions above A large tin glazed earthenware model of a stylised cat decorated with typical abstract resist motifs all over in shades of dark grey/blue 36cm high (ARR) Note: James Tower almost entirely used vases and plates for his experimental techniques of decoration but three of his contemporaries; Margi Hine, William Newland and Nicholas Vergette (the so called 'Picasettes') all used more figurative forms for their ceramics so it is possible that Tower had been inspired by their work in this instance Literature: A similar cat can be seen in a photograph with the artist at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham Court, 1952, which is reproduced in Timothy Wilcox's 'The Ceramic Art of James Tower', Lund Humphries, 2012, pg. 27 Provenance: Bonhams, 20th June 2013, Lot 188

James Tower (British, 1919-1988) Sculptural standing vessel, 1955 signed and dated 70cm across, 41cm wide. Provenance: Given to the artist Paul Gell by the potter, and then passed onto Kenneth Clark. This sculptural piece is one of the earliest known examples of Tower's standing sculptures. It pre-dates Tower's trip to America and therefore historically we can surmise that Tower was already considering standing sculptures before any direct American influence on his work.

Tower only made three bronze sculptures, each one containing similar indentations and ridges. This rare sculpture embodies Tower's love of the natural world, especially the sea. Marine life and forms such as shells, were a constant source of inspiration for Tower, as well as the beach itself and the ridges left in the sand by waves and the receding tide. Please note: the base for this work is 3 inches high, and is not included in the dimensions.

Tower was often called a "Picassoette", along with William Newland, Margaret Hine and Nicholas Vergette. This term, originally used by Bernard Leach, referred to how they drew inspiration from Pablo Picasso and the British tin glaze tradition (Leach, on the other hand, was influenced by traditional British slipware and eastern ceramics). Tower's works are known for their sculptural shapes, yet they often retain a small opening, reminding us that they are vessels. These reinvented vases evoke the long tradition of vessels made for practical use or for sheer decorative display by potters over the centuries. Tower's ceramic vessels all share the same rich, glossy tin glaze. This stunning surface is inspired by the patterns of water over sand. Included with this lot is a 22 1/2 x 18 inch related preliminary watercolour and gouache on paper sketch.

His ceramics all have a unique style of black or brown markings that cover an otherwise glossy, white tin-glazed surface. Greatly inspired by the beach and sea, this bowl illustrates his fascination with the movement of pebbles and sand.
