Item Overview

Description

James Tower (British, 1919-1988)
Sculptural standing vessel, 1955
signed and dated
70cm across, 41cm wide.

Provenance:
Given to the artist Paul Gell by the potter, and then passed onto Kenneth Clark.

This sculptural piece is one of the earliest known examples of Tower's standing sculptures. It pre-dates Tower's trip to America and therefore historically we can surmise that Tower was already considering standing sculptures before any direct American influence on his work.
