      An early 20th century Russian enamel and diamond

      An early 20th century Russian enamel and diamond brooch, circa1900, maker's mark AT, 56 kokoshniks St Petersburg, assaymaster Jakov Liapunov, scratch inventory number 73 (?)726, centrally set with an old brilliant cut diamond against a red guilloche enamel triangular ground and an outer border of rose cut diamonds, kokoshnik mark and work master's mark on pin and catch, the pin with a further faint indecipherable mark, 2.1cm long The maker's mark 'AT' was used by four work masters in Russia at the end of the 19th and early 20th century. The mark is found on jewellery produced by Alfred Thielemann for Faberge, and on jewellery by Alexander Tillander and A. Treiden. The jewellery produced by Thielemann is typically small enamel pieces set with rose cut diamonds, whilst Tillander produced very similar jewels for his own business. Overall wear and tear commensurate with age and use. Very minor surface scuffs to the enamel, no chips. All diamonds present and appear original, none are chipped. NO signs of damage or repair.

      St. Petersburg, Alexander Tillander, Ende 19. Jh. Sich konisch verjüngende Schneide aus Nephrit. Ornamentale Goldmontierung punziert mit Stadtmarke und Meisterzeichen AT. L. 22 cm. Originales Holzetui mit Firmenstempel A. TILLANDER. (64509006)Alexander Tillanders Leben ist eine finnische Erfolgsgeschichte in St.Petersburg. 1837 als Sohn einer armen Bauernfamilie geboren, wurde er nach St.Petersburg geschickt, um dort ein Auskommen zu finden. Alexander sollte zu einem Friseur in die Lehre gehen. Dies gefiel ihm jedoch gar nicht und er fand eine neue Lehrstelle bei dem finnischen Goldschmied Fredrik Adolf Holstenius in Tsarskoe Selo. Als ausgebildeter Goldschmied kehrte er nach St. Petersburg zurück und beschloss 1860, sein eigenes Unternehmen zu gründen und begann mit der Fertigung von einfachen Armreifen, die damals in Mode und daher einfach zu verkaufen waren. Langsam begann das Unternehmen zu wachsen und die Zahl der Angestellten und das Prestige der Kunden nahm kontinuierlich zu. Bald gehörten auch die einflussreichen Kreise des St.Petersburger Zarenhofes zu seinen Auftraggebern. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts kam zur Schmuckproduktion die Fertigung von Schmuckobjekten dazu. Anfang der 90er Jahre trat dann der Sohn des Firmengründers Alexander Junior ins Unternehmen ein. Nachdem er in Moskau bereits Erfolge mit dem Verkauf von Diamantschmuck aus Paris hatte, begann er die Geschäftstätigkeit des Vaters mit neuen Aktivitäten zu ergänzen. Alexander Junior brachte sich selbst und seine Familie 1917 nach Finnland in Sicherheit. Sein Vater jedoch verstarb an den Nachfolgen eines Raubüberfalls im Alter von 81 Jahren noch in St.Petersburg.A fine nephrite paper knife with ornamental gold mount.
