Attributed to Jane Stuart (RI/MA 1812-1888). Copy of her father’s (Gilbert Stuart) painting. The painting commemorates an American victory in the Revolutionary War; by occupying Dorchester Heights, the Colonist's troops threatened Boston Harbor with artillery fire and forced the British army to evacuate the city.Period frame, image 36” x 24”. Restored by the late Morton Bradley. Another copy hangs in Faneuil Hall; the original is in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. With provenance letter by the consignor. Good condition. • [Washington, George] Painting of George Washington at Dorchester Heights, c. 1830
        Nov. 15, 2014

[Washington, George] Painting of George Washington at Dorchester Heights, c. 1830

        Est: $25,000 - $30,000

[washington, George] Painting of George Washington At Dorchester Heights, C. 1830. Original oil on canvas attributed to Jane Stuart after her father, Gilbert Stuart's painting of the same title. Measures 16" x 25" by sight; housed in an antique frame measuring 21" x 29". A full-length portrait of Washington during the siege of Boston in March 1776. His left hand holds the reins of his white horse and rests on the horse's back; his right hand holds his tricorn hat. Washington wears a blue jacket with yellow trim, and a yellow waistcoat and breeches. Some craquelure to painting, which is a fine example. Jane Stuart (c. 1808 or 1812-1888) was the 12th and youngest child of Gilbert and Charlotte Stuart. As a child, she assisted her father by grinding pigments and filling in backgrounds, but never received any formal training from him; nevertheless, she listened as he instructed his students and taught herself by copying her father's paintings. She first exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum as early as 1827, and when her father died deeply in debt in 1828, her family depended on her talent to support them. The family moved to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1831, and Jane became a leading portrait painter. She is regarded as the best copyist of Gilbert Stuart. Examples of this painting may be found in the Smithsonian Museum and the Maryland Historical Society. Ex Historical Collectible Auctions, 2007; private collector William Chaney; Sotheby's, 2000. Estimated Value $25,000-UP.

        Oct. 09, 2010

        A PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

A PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON Attributed to Jane Stuart, (1812?-1888), after Gilbert Stuart. A fine portrait of Washington, unsigned but a frame plaque attributes it to Jane Stuart, oil on canvas, 28 1/2" x 24", framed, minor retouching and craquelure not affecting the image. This familiar image, known as the "Athenaeum Portrait", was originally painted in 1796 from life by Gilbert Stuart and is best known for its appearance on the one-dollar bill. The President, then 63 years old, grumbled about the drudgery of posing, and all of Stuart's wit and wisdom failed to interest him. The artist claimed that "an apathy seemed to seize him, and a vacuity spread over his countenance, most appalling to paint". Nevertheless, Stuart's original portrait has spontaneity because of its relatively quick, sketchy technique. The warm tan under-painting in our example shows through the thinly brushed hair, while slashes of pigment model the black queue ribbon and form the highlights of the collar and cravat that carefully preserves Stuart's technique. The youngest daughter of the famous portraitist, Jane Stuart also became a noted portraitist in her own right and did numerous copies of her father's well-known paintings of George Washington and other notables of the day. While other artists also copied Stuart's works, hers are credited with being some of the best and include the portrait of Washington at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. So good was her technique that she finished many of Stuart's other works, including the acclaimed portrait of naval officer Oliver Hazard Perry (1818). Jane began as a studio assistant grinding pigments at age 12. She enjoyed a good relationship with her notoriously difficult father, who quirkily called her "boy". Little When Stuart died in 1828, leaving the family deep in debt, Jane began taking commissions to ease the family's straits. Despite Stuart's financial failings, Jane was always defensive of her father and indeed became the proverbial keeper of Stuart's legacy. In fact, much of what we know of her father comes from reminiscences Jane published in Scribner's Monthly Magazine in which she concurred with public opinion that her father was quick and cranky but success came from his equally-quick determination of his sitter's character. Jane became a noted teacher later in life and counted among her students Richard Morrell Staig, best known for his portrait of Oliver Wolcott, Jr. Never married, she became a well-known socialite and match-maker in Newport until her death. A striking and highly impressive work, relined and re-varnished with minimal touch-up. Purchased by our consignor from Garth's Auctions and ex: Robert Vose Galleries. A signed Jane Stuart painting of Washington achieved $194,000 at Northeast Auctions in 2008, while a second fetched $49,000. Very good condition, should be viewed.

Unsigned, the reverse of each canvas is inscribed: "Copy of Gilbert Stuart's Washington by his daughter Jane Stuart, Boston." Oil on canvas, oval bust-length portraits in an oval with dark spandrels, surrounded by black spandrels, 17 1/4 x 18 1/4 in., in original molded gilt-gesso frames. Condition: Minor retouch. Provenance: Descended in the consignors' family since the late 19th century. Note: Jane Stuart was the youngest of Gilbert Stuart's twelve children. Linda Eppich, who curated an exhibition of Jane's work at the Redwood Library in Newport, Rhode Island, earlier this year, reports that Jane was known to assist in her father's studio, even in her youth. After Gilbert's death in 1828, 'she spent much of her life defending her father's reputation and turning out copies of his most famous works,' according to Bill Van Ciclen, who reviewed the Redwood Library's show ('Gilbert Stuart's daughter was a fine artist in her own right,' Providence Journal, February 8, 2009). Portraits like those offered presently were especially popular.

      • ATTRIBUTED TO JANE STUART (AMERICAN, 1816-1888) GEORGE WASHINGTON (LANSDOWNE TYPE)
        May. 14, 1993

ATTRIBUTED TO JANE STUART (AMERICAN, 1816-1888) GEORGE WASHINGTON (LANSDOWNE TYPE)

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 29 x 21 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Good, lined onto Masonite, retouched, minor abrasion u.c., craquelure. PROVENANCE A private Vermont collection. N.B.: Jane Stuart copied the works of her father Gilbert Stuart on numerous occasions. She is known to have made approximately 17 copies of the so-called Lansdowne type, which Gilbert completed in 1796. This particular copy was taken from one of Gilbert's later versions of the composition. Washington's right hand rests on the copy of the Constitution on the desk rather than gesturing into open air as in Gilbert's earlier versions, and the carpet of the earlier versions has been replaced by an ornate marble floor.
