Item Overview

Description

Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 29 x 21 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Good, lined onto Masonite, retouched, minor abrasion u.c., craquelure. PROVENANCE A private Vermont collection. N.B.: Jane Stuart copied the works of her father Gilbert Stuart on numerous occasions. She is known to have made approximately 17 copies of the so-called Lansdowne type, which Gilbert completed in 1796. This particular copy was taken from one of Gilbert's later versions of the composition. Washington's right hand rests on the copy of the Constitution on the desk rather than gesturing into open air as in Gilbert's earlier versions, and the carpet of the earlier versions has been replaced by an ornate marble floor.
