att. Jane Stuart (RI,1812-1888), Pair of Portraits oil on hand hewn panel, unsigned, the first is of a lady wearing a dark gown with white lace collar and bonnet, seated with her hands resting in her lap and holding a pair of eyeglasses, a folded letter numbered 25, and a white cloth, she also wears two gold bands, one on each hand, very expressionistic brushstrokes are visible in the romantic landscape and sunlit sky peaking from behind a red curtain; the gentleman is seated in a matching chair to that of his wife, with red upholstery and curved arm support, he wears a dark three piece suit with finely puffed white shirt, holding a small bound pamphlet with light blue cover in one hand, while his other partially obscures a gold fob at his waist, he sits before a dark background with a red drapery just visible along the left side of the portrait; both portraits in original gilt composition frames with stipple detail to ogee molded form, interior liner also with gilt composition ornament. - SS 37h x 28w; DOA 47.5h x 39w The portraits are reputed to have come from a house in Philadelphia, however the family name is not known. Sold by McClees Galleries of Haverford PA in the early 1980's (with letter from Gallery).
