This magnificent still life shows a garland of fruit on a stone plinth together with a red macaw and a grey parrot in front of a balustrade with a stone vase and columns. The painting is a partial copy, possibly from the artist's own hand, of a composition that also shows flowers in a vase, a monkey, a turtle and a wine cooler in a larger format (139 x 194.5 cm). This painting was sold on the art market in 2016 (Sotheby's New York, 28th January 2016, lot 46; see also the archive of the RKD, image no. 60548).

  • JORIS VAN SON (Antwerp 1623-?, 1667). "Border of flowers with Eros". Oil on canvas. Relined.

JORIS VAN SON (Antwerp 1623-?, 1667). "Border of flowers with Eros". Oil on canvas. Relined.

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

JORIS VAN SON (Antwerp 1623-?, 1667). Orla de flores con Eros" ("Border of Flowers with Eros"). Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. Size: 96,5 x 76 cm. In the first quarter of the 17th century a new formula was developed in the Flemish medium, within the genre of flower painting, which, recreated by a large group of artists and workshops, would achieve an outstanding success throughout the century in a large part of Europe: the garland of flowers as a framing and enhancing element of a central theme. Brueghel de Velurs was the initiator of this type of composition, particularly linked in his work to the depiction of the Virgin and Child. However, it was his disciple, the Jesuit Daniel Seghers, who was the dominant figure in this specialised production and the creator of a prototype that would serve as a model for the numerous Flemish and foreign continuators and imitators of the genre. This work is of great interest because it replaces the usual floral border with an attractive variety of fruit, including grapes, lemons, pears and pomegranates, which stand out in a wide range of colours against the dark green background of the foliage. Next to this border, inscribed in the centre, is a medallion depicting the figure of Eros with the attributes of Venus. Joris van Son was a Flemish still-life painter who worked in various sub-genres, but is best known for his fruit still lifes. He also painted flowers, banquets, vanitas still lifes and pronkstillevens. He is known to have painted still lifes of fish depicting the Four Elements, and he also collaborated with figure artists on 'garland paintings', which generally depict a devotional image framed by a garland of fruit or flowers. Van Son's still lifes almost always include fruit, often of varieties that are not indigenous but imported. His still lifes are enlivened by branches of cherries or raspberries, which give the composition a great lightness. The objects are arranged on a level table or shelf to create an intimacy with the viewer.

(Antwerp 1623–1667) A vanitas still life with fruit, a gilded goblet, a musical score, a shell and a skull, oil on canvas, 67.5 x 80 cm, framed Provenance: Captain Edward George Spencer Churchill (1876–1964), Northwick Park, Blockley; sale, Christie’s, London, 29 October 1965, lot 98; sale, Christie’s, London, 10 December 2004, lot 59; sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 18 October 2016, lot 50; Private collection, Germany The present painting is registered in the RKD database under no. 0000049722 (as Joris van Son). The present still-life, with its meticulous rendering of textures, and modelling of forms through the use of subtle lighting, comes from the hand of the Antwerp Baroque master Joris van Son. Famed for his pronkstillevens and less ostentatious depictions of fruit, and vanitas still lifes, van Son’s works exude the strong influence of the pioneering Dutch master Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684), who ran an accomplished Antwerp workshop. Van Son may have assisted the great master, before being made a master himself of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1633. Despite the rich celebration of natural beauty in van Son’s works, his membership of the Jesuit bachelor confraternity Sodaliteit van de Bejaerde Jongmans bears testament to the deep spirituality in his works, with an enduring sense of their being reflections on the transience of life. His popularity is attested to by mentions of his works in inventories of important artists and collectors of his time, such as Victor Wolfvoet. A keen master, his pupils included Frans van Everbroeck, Cornelis van Huynen, Norbert Montalie, Abraham Herderwijn and Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Younger.

STILLLEBEN MIT FRÜCHTETABLETT, HUMMER UND AUSTERN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 49 x 65 cm. Links unten an Tischplatte signiert „J. VAN. SON.“ In dekorativem Rahmen. There are many similarities to van Son’s other verified works, such as some Still Lifes with Fruit and Lobster held at the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and Galerie De Jonckheere – in Brussels and Paris – or one that was offered for sale at Christie’s in London on 4 July 2012. There is another, slightly smaller version of the present painting, which is probably a very good work by the workshop. With minor restorations.

Früchtestillleben Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 36 x 40,5 cm. In profiliertem teilebonisierten Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Jaco Rutgers, Tilburg, 15. Mai 2020. (10315119) (21) Joris van Son, 1623 Antwerp - 1677 STILL LIFE WITH TRAY OF FRUIT, CRAYFISH AND OYSTERS Oil on canvas. Relined. 49 x 65 cm. Signed lower left. Joris van Son was one of the most talented followers of Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Just as his master, he specialised in still lifes with fruit, flowers, crustaceans and many other typical motifs of Flemish and Dutch banquet painting. The choice and arrangement of the objects in the present signed work is very typical for van Son. It shows all of his excellent qualities and was therefore probably painted during his artistic heyday ca. 1670. The painting shows many similarities with other works conclusively attributed to van Sons, such as several still lifes with fruit and lobsters held, for example, at the National Museum in Stockholm, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the Galerie De Jonckheere, Brussles/ Paris, or the painting sold on 4 July 2012 at Christie’s in London.

Joris van Son, attributed to, Three Putti with Vanitas Symbols within a Decorated Cartouche

    Est: €7,000 - €9,000

The motif of a sculpted Baroque cartouche hung with garlands surrounding a central, usually religious, motif was established by the Antwerp painter Daniel Seghers. The present work is attributed to another Antwerp artist, Joris van Son, and shows heavy garlands of fruit wound around a curved stone cartouche surrounding three central putti. These present typical symbols of vanitas - a skull, soap bubbles and opulently glittering vases as symbols of transient earthly wealth.
