        ROTTIERS (colonel Bernard Eugène Antoine). Monuments of Rhodes. Dedicated to S. M. Le Roi. Bruxelles, chez Mme Vve Colinez, 1828. In-4 oblong, [1] f. title, [1] f. table and 75 plates, all engraved on Chine appliqué. Black half-basane with corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt title (period binding). Binding worn, rubbed and spotted, inside spine split, tears, foxing and marginal spotting, plate 44 replaced by a loose lithograph. Several sections and plates loose. First edition comprising 75 lithographs by H. Delpierre after drawings by P.J. Witdoeck, including 9 enhanced in color: map of the island of Rhodes, views of the port, fortifications, buildings, some in ruins, details of frescoes in color, etc. Colonel Rottiers (1771-1857) carried out several archaeological missions in Greece, in close collaboration with the Dutch government. The antiquities he brought back enriched the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.

Rottier's journey through the Mediterranean, with the purpose to buy antiquities. The resulting art collection, named after the author Rottiers Collection, became an integral part of the collection of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Incl. 3 maps: 1. Carte topographique de Constantinople et de ses environs. - 2. Carte du Bosphore; depuis la Mer Noire jusqu'aux Dardanelles. - 3. Carte dressée par le Mr. le colonel Rottiers, pour servir à son itinéraire de Tiflis à Constantinople (Brussels, H. Delpierre, s.d.). This issue by the Tencé brothers, who also published Rottiers' previous work, was available for sale in April 1729. - Ref. (some pl. sl. age-toned, occ. sl. foxing). - Atlas complete with title and 75 plates, all hand-coloured and partly heightened with Arabic gum: map with coloured borders engr. by J. Collon and 74 nice lithographs by G. Simonau, Madou (Colossus of Rhodes), van Genk, Boëns, Kreins, Vanden Kerchoven, P.J. Delpierre, etc. after P.J. Witdoeck and colonel Rottiers. They depict the outskirts of the island, ruins, old buildings of the Crusaders and Knights Hospitalier before they left for Malta, etc. At the request of the Dutch King, Rottiers and the painter Witdoek left for a scientific expedition to Rhodes. The three “Rottiers collections” brought together by him form an important part of the basic collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. Whilst under the service of King William I of the Netherlands, in 1824, Rottiers proposed to the king to undertake a trip to Greece with the aim of purchasing antiquities there. The king and government agreed and made Rottiers available a warship and money. The journey lasted a year and a half and covered most of the years 1825 and 1826. Rottiers was accompanied during this trip by his youngest son Victor and the painter Petrus Josephus Witdoeck.
