      • Histoire critique du Vieux Testament. [Amsterdam, Elzevier], 1680. L’exemplaire de Racine. Première édition elzévirienne complète. In-4. Basane de l'époque.

Histoire critique du Vieux Testament. [Amsterdam, Elzevier], 1680. L’exemplaire de Racine. Première édition elzévirienne complète. In-4. Basane de l'époque.

        Est: €1,000 - €1,500

[Racine, Jean] ─ Richard Simon Histoire critique du Vieux Testament. Suivant la copie imprimée à Paris [Amsterdam, D. Elzevier], 1680. In-4 (207 x 147 mm).

SECOND AND BEST ENGLISH EDITION of Du Halde's encyclopaedic survey, based on the reports of 17 Jesuit missionaries. The first edition of 1736 contained only 20 maps and plates. This edition comprises 42 maps based on Jesuit surveys carried out between 1708 and 1718, and 22 other plates showing costume, smaller town plans, scenes from court life and other subjects. The large 'General map' incorporates Bowen's corrections of d'Anville's longitudinal markings. An unprecedented amount of knowledge is likewise conveyed in the one thousand text pages, fuelling the contemporary taste for chinoiserie. The work is also notable for including an account of Bering's 1728 voyage to Siberia through the eponymous straits (vol.II, pp.382-84). The double-page 'Map of Capt. Beering's Travels from Tobolsk to Kamtschatka' (opp. p.382) is based on the manuscript map which he gave to the king of Poland before it was passed to Du Halde. De Backer & Sommervogel IV, 37; Cordier Sinica I, 50; Cox I, 355; Lada-Mocarski 2; Lust Western Books on China 15. (2)

[London]: Printed for Richard Mariot and Thomas Dring, 1662. 2o (426 x 262 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. Etched frontispiece of the royal arms by W. HOLLAR, and 12 plates (8 double-page on guards, 4 folding), all but one by Hollar, engraved illustration on Z1v, engraved vignettes of coins (lacking engraved portrait of Ogilby, discreet repairs to a few plates, plates trimmed occasionally affecting plate mark and image). Modern maroon morocco gilt, title gilt-lettered on front cover, gilt edges (some minor rubbing). The first five plates, each double-page and in four horizontal rows, form a panorama of Charles II's coronation procession. The additional double-page plates illustrate the trophies of Marius, a procession on foot in six horizontal rows, and the choir at Westminster Abbey filled with spectators, while the four single-page plates depict triumphal archways erected for the occasion. In addition to descriptions of the archways, a short narrative of the coronation is included in which the order of the procession is listed as well as the order of the ceremony.
