Adriaen v. Nieulandt, Rachel hides the Teraphim, early 17th C

      Est: €25,600 - €32,000

Oil on panel Netherlands, early 17th century Adriaen van Nieulandt I (1587-1658) - Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver Signed and dated on the stone lower right 'adriaen van nieulandt 160(?)' Overall dimensions, framed: 87 x 109 cm Provenance: Collection Tenor Michele Tiziano, Germany Fine depiction of a rare subject from the Old Testament The present painting was made by the Antwerp painter Adriaen van Nieulandt I and dates back to the early 17th century. It depicts a large-scale, figurative scene of the dispute between Jacob and Laban which goes back to the first book of Genesis, chapters 30 to 35. Laban and his brothers chased after Jacob, because he had kidnapped Laban's daughters Rachel and Lea. In the mountains of Gilead, they caught up with him. Since God had previously ordered Laban to be friends with Jacob, Laban finally offered the latter the bond of friendship. The present work combines several parts of the ongoing story. In the background, Rachel is meanwhile depicted inside the tent hiding the missing teraphim from her father quickly under the saddle of a camel. The painting is in good overall condition considering its age. The impasto is still fresh in the lighter areas and the fine details are also still in good order. The work is signed and dated 'adriaen van nieulandt 160(?)' lower right. It is composed of two panels, which are slightly detached. There are some abrasions along the edges, caused by the rubbing frame. The paint surface is slightly thin in the darker areas and some discolored retouching is visible to the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals further areas of retouching to much of the sky and lines of strengthening to the darker details of the vegetation and architecture. Besides, there are scattered small areas of restoration affecting mainly the darker pigments. The wooden frame shows clear traces of age and use and measures 87 x 109 cm. The size of the panel is 70 x 92 cm. Adriaen van Nieulandt I (1587-1658) Adriaen van Nieulandt I was the son of a Dutch family of artists of Flemish origin, whose activity can be traced back to the period around 1561. He was trained under the painters Pieter Isaacsz (1569-1625) and Frans Baden (1571-1618) in Antwerp. Van Nieulandt I was active as a painter and engraver primarily devoted his oeuvre to landscape painting, which was animated by profane and biblical themes. In addition, he was also interested in the depiction of interiors. Adriaen van Nieulandt I was however not only an artist, but also acted successfully as mediators and broker of artworks. ADRIAEN VAN NIEULANDT ANTWERP 1587 - 1658 AMSTERDAM VIEW OF ROME, SEEN ACROSS THE TIBER FROM THE MONTE GIANICOLO pen and dark grey ink and watercolour, over traces of black chalk PROVENANCE Paul Brandt, Amsterdam EXHIBITED Utrecht, Centraal Museum, Nederlandse Tekeningen 16e & 17e Eeuw uit de Collectie Paul Brandt, 1963, cat. no. 61; Dordrecht, Dordrechts Museum, Nederlandse Tekeningen uit de Collectie Paul Brandt, 1968, cat. no. 78; Apeldoorn, Gemeente Van Reekum Galerij, Landscappen en Stadsgezichten uit 4 Eeuwen, 1972 CATALOGUE NOTE Adriaen van Nieulandt the Elder was one of an extensive Antwerp artist family, and was the brother of Willem van Nieulandt the Younger (see lot 137). Few signed drawings by him are known, but the present example is very close in execution to the landscape formerly in the Butôt Collection (sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's 16 November 1993, lot 106), and to an Italianate landscape of 1649, published by Bernt as a definitive example of the artist's style (see W. Bernt, Die niederländischen Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich 1958, vol. II, no. 443). Two other comparable drawing by the artist, both signed, are in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, (inv. MB 315), and the De Grez Collection at the Royal Museum, Brussels (1913 catalogue, no. 2703).
