Similar artists: Georges Morin, Paul Philippe, Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss, Victor Heinrich Seifert, Theophile Somme, Romain De Tirtoff, and Paul Ludwig Kowalczewski. “Snake Dancer” is a marble and bronze sculpture, signed on the marble base: Prof. Poertzel. Otto Poertzel was a German sculptor who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Erwin Kurz and Adolf von Hildebrandt, at the Technical Academy for Porcelain with Reinhard Möller, and at the Kunstakademie with Erwin Kurz. He was trained as a porcelain model at Aw Fr. Kister. He exhibited at international exhibitions numerous times, including the St. Louis World’s Fair and the Brussels International Art Exhibition. Poertzel was a prominent sculptor in Germany, even being placed under special protection by his patron, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His early works were shown in the salons of German Royal Courts, with some purchased by the King of Bulgaria. Poertzel created many sculptures featuring female dancers. Here we see a dancer with a snakeskin patterned jumper, balancing on one foot which is encircled by a snake. She casts her energy upwards with her fingers extended out and her head cast back, looking to the skies.

This Montreal modernist, through his teaching at the École des beaux-arts and the Art Association of Montreal and his connection to the Beaver Hall Group, moved in a fresh and stimulating milieu. Known for his bold nudes, fine woodcuts and vivid landscapes, Holgate found one of his important painting places in the Laurentians. He built a painting cabin at Lac Tremblant in 1925 and, after serving as an official war artist in World War II, desired complete immersion in this rural landscape. In 1946 he moved to Morin Heights, and this time of peace and reflection greatly pleased him. Holgate attained an easy spontaneity with his Laurentian subjects, often close-up studies of the landscape, as in this beautiful hillside scene. A natural, tonal palette of greens, grays and ochres is enlivened with bright sparks of orange and vivid streaks of white. Sensuous, soft brushwork reinforces the sense of Holgate's intimacy with this tranquil landscape.

Kathleen Moir Morris 1893 - 1986 Canadian oil on panel Morin Heights, Que. 12 x 14 inches 30.5 x 35.6 centimeters signed and on verso titled on a label Provenance:A gift from the Artist in the 1930s to the present Private Collector, Ontario Kathleen Morris joined Montreal's Beaver Hall Group in 1920 and continued to exhibit with the members after the group formally dissolved. Morris also exhibited internationally in group shows at such venues as the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley, England, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, the Tate Gallery in London, and the New York World's Fair, to name a few. Eric Brown, director of the National Gallery of Canada at the time, was an early supporter who ensured that her work was acquired by that museum. Morris's winter scenes were particularly sought after, and she was known for her cabstands, churches and town scenes enveloped in snow. This evocative scene of a Laurentian Mountains town on an overcast winter day is a fine example of this part of her oeuvre. The sky is not altogether steely, being comprised of strokes of mauve and pink tempered with grey, and the snow mounded around the buildings is also shot through with delicate pastel notes. With a keen eye for such details as the rushing stream crossing in front, the muddied road and the houses huddled together in the snowbanks, Morris captured the unique charm of this town. This painting and lot 153 were gifts from Morris to one of her art students.

Holgate is one of Canada's most accomplished and well-respected artists. After his service as a Second World War artist and upon returning to Canada, Holgate and his wife Frances relocated to Morin Heights, a lovely area slightly northwest of Montreal. The landscape of the captivating Laurentians provided a wide breadth of subject matter for Holgate as is illustrated in this attractive winter scene. Pepall notes that Holgate "was not very productive in the summer but the winter and spring saw a good deal of activity.....Holgate continued painting landscape scenes and portraits of his friends in the community, and, ever the teacher, gave art classes to local groups." The tranquility and happiness Holgate derived from his everyday life in Morin Heights is reflected in his paintings of the period. The quiet flow of the river and the bright sunshine atop the snow mounds symbolize all the natural beauty and serenity of a typical Quebec winter.
