Item Overview

Description

Kathleen Moir Morris 1893 - 1986 Canadian oil on panel Morin Heights, Que. 12 x 14 inches 30.5 x 35.6 centimeters signed and on verso titled on a label Provenance:A gift from the Artist in the 1930s to the present Private Collector, Ontario Kathleen Morris joined Montreal's Beaver Hall Group in 1920 and continued to exhibit with the members after the group formally dissolved. Morris also exhibited internationally in group shows at such venues as the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley, England, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, the Tate Gallery in London, and the New York World's Fair, to name a few. Eric Brown, director of the National Gallery of Canada at the time, was an early supporter who ensured that her work was acquired by that museum. Morris's winter scenes were particularly sought after, and she was known for her cabstands, churches and town scenes enveloped in snow. This evocative scene of a Laurentian Mountains town on an overcast winter day is a fine example of this part of her oeuvre. The sky is not altogether steely, being comprised of strokes of mauve and pink tempered with grey, and the snow mounded around the buildings is also shot through with delicate pastel notes. With a keen eye for such details as the rushing stream crossing in front, the muddied road and the houses huddled together in the snowbanks, Morris captured the unique charm of this town. This painting and lot 153 were gifts from Morris to one of her art students.
