Metz, Conrad Martin: Angelika und Medoro

        Est: €2,000 - €2,400

Angelika und Medoro. -- Feder in Braun, braun laviert, weiß gehöht. 39,7 x 28,8 cm. Signiert und datiert "C.M. Metz Roma 1817". -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

        Mar. 23, 2021

Conrad Martin Metz, German 1749-1827- The Death of Florine of Burgundy; pen and black ink and m

        Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Conrad Martin Metz, German 1749-1827- The Death of Florine of Burgundy; pen and black ink and monochrome wash heightened with white on wove paper, signed and dated 1813, 56x69.5cm Note: As there are scarcely any recorded female warrior martyrs from the crusades it is almost certain that this work depicts the death of Florine of Burgundy and her husband Sweyn the Crusader, just after they led fifteen hundred horsemen into battle during the First Crusade. Their last moments are depicted as Sweyn cradles the dying heroine, her armour cast off on the ground beside. Held in a gilded frame, glazed and mounted. The work has not been examined out of the frame so unable to determine how the sheet has been stuck down. The sheet appears to have slipped slightly, revealing the upper right hand edge, there is evidence of mount shadow and discoloration here. There is some slight ruckling to the sheet, with faint creases in places, heavier creasing to the lower left hand corner. There are faint spots of foxing here and there, and some liquid marks to the lower left hand corner, fainter liquid marks/blemishes in the background and the right hand flag. The upper torso of Florine and Sweyn's left shoulder has been painted on an additional piece of paper and stuck on top of the original sheet, this appears to be a later addition. The surface is worn in areas and there is a light surface scratch in the lower left hand section running across Florine's armour (right leg). Overall the work appears to be in fair condition.
