Notes

German born, Metz was a pupil of Bartolozzi in London, before becoming a Royal Academician. Painter and engraver, best known by his numerous imitations and facsimiles of drawings by the old masters, he concentrated particularly on classical illustrations. In 1802 Metz left for Rome, where he spent the rest of his life and commenced a series of engravings after the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, by Michaelangelo.
