      JULIUS MAŘÁK 1832 - 1899 - ROCKY LANDSCAPE WITH A RIDER

      Est: -

From the expert assessment of PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová: "The submitted unsigned Rocky Landscape with a rider is, in my opinion, an undoubted and typical work of the painter Julius Mařák, after comparison with other paintings probably from the first half of the 1970s. Mařák then visited the Tyrolean Alps, where he created many drawings and a studies of forest nature, many of which later became the basis for oil works. Intimate knowledge of forest still lifes, forest edges or mountainous rocky slopes and rocky slopes was a lifeless source of painting inspiration for Mařák throughout his life. The presented study, painted with a detailed velvety soft charcoal drawing, is a successful proof of this." Literature: Blažíčková-Horová, N .: Julius Mařák and his pupils, catalog of the exhibition of the National Gallery in Prague, Prague, 1999. Technique: pencil, charcoal, white pastel, paper, Signed: unsigned

      Jun. 14, 2022

      JULIUS MAŘÁK 1832 - 1899 - EVENING IN A FOREST

      Est: -

The remarkable and very beautiful drawing can be dated to likely the period between 1872 and 1875. At that time, Mařák married and spent the next three years in the Tyrolean Alps with his young wife and pupil. The result is romantic sentimental forest subjects. He also drew several evening and nighttime variations of the forest interior. The picturesque charcoal drawing, shaded by a wealth of grey and brownish-black gradations and the reddish-brown lights of the setting sun, shows how Mařák tended to paint rather than draw in his imaginative works. Although he shifted from what were initially composed landscapes to specific, real scenes, he primarily sought and found in them impressions, moods and emotions. Mařák created a large collection of drawings during his lifetime. Exhibiton: 1929, JUV, cat. No. 89. Technique: Pencil, watercolour, white paint, paper, Signed: Unsigned

JULIUS MARAK (1832-1899): PATH IN A WOODED HILLSIDE

      Est: -

First half of the 1880s 44 x 35.5 cm (h x w) Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: "Julius Marak". According to the expert opinion prepared by PhDr. Nadezda Blazicková-Horová, “Path in a Wooded Hillside is a very beautiful work by painter Julius Marák, likely from the mid-1880s. At that time, Marák’s scope narrowed and focused on smaller, hemmed-in areas. His subjects were the forest interior and forest life; he admired forest glades, clearings, paths, meadows, marshes and ponds. The forest was Marák’s second home, the place where he sought solitaires amongst the woods, studied the character and growth of trees, branches and thickets, and examined the appearance of stony and grassy hillsides, streams and trails. With the help of steps hewn from tree trunks and the composition of natural formations and leafy trees, the airy Path in a Wooded Hillside impresses the viewer with its effective tonality, play with light, and assuredness with which the scene is constructed, proving Marák’s mastery of landscapes.” Starting price: 150 000 CZK (5 882 EUR)
