S. Mancadan h: 56,50 w: 90,50 cm Commentaire : La joute des baisers est un épisode du ''Pastor Fido'' de Giovanni Battista Guarini (acte 2, scène 1). Véritable succès européen, la première impression de cet ouvrage qui raconte les amours de la nymphe Amaryllis et de Mirtil date de 1590. Un oracle a prédit que l''Arcadie serait soumise à divers fléaux jusqu''à ce qu''Amaryllis, descendante de Pan, ne soit unie à un berger d''origine divine. Silvio, descendant d''Hercule ne s''intéresse pas à Amaryllis, mais Mirtil en est épris. On le voit ici, travesti, participer à un concours de baisers qui se joue entre les nymphes et qu''il remporte. Sur le côté une nymphe prépare les lauriers du vainqueur. Couronné par le juge qui n''est autre qu''Amaryllis, Myrtil lui rendra la couronne et dévoilera son identité, révélant qu''il est le frère de Silvio. Rendu possible, leur mariage sauvera l''Arcadie. Le sujet qui connut un grand succès dans les Provinces-Unies, fut traité pour la première fois par Anton van Dyck, sur commande du stathouder Frédéric-Henri, avant 1632 (panneau, 23 x 35,5 cm, E.N.S.B.A. Paris ; Cf. Barnes, ''Van Dyck, a complete catalogue of the paintings'', 2004, p. 293). Il s''agit là, semble-t-il, de la première représentation d''un épisode de l''ouvrage de Guarini aux Pays-Bas.

"Guarini berichtet in seiner Tragikomödie von einem Fluch der auf Arkadien liegt. Dieser kann nur durch die Hochzeit zweier Abkömmlinge von Göttern gelöst werden. Das ist der Grund, weshalb die Liebe des Hirten Mirtillo aussichtlos erscheint. Er hat sich in die schöne Amarilli verliebt. Sie soll jedoch als Enkelin des Pan einen Nachfahren des Herkules heiraten, um das Land endlich zu erlösen. Jacobus Sibrandi Mancadan wählt eine von südlicher Sonne ausgebleichte Ruinenlandschaft mit Ziegen und Rindern um die Begegnung Mirtillos mit seinem Freund, dem er sein Leibesleid klagt, zu schildern. Trotz ihres rustikalen Rohzustandes und der ungeschönten Art mit der Mancadan die Natur schildert, entwickelt diese Landschaftsszenerie einen herben Charme. Eine umgekehrte Sehrichtung schlägt Vandy Rattana ein. Was auf den ersten Blick wie eine anmutig überwucherte von Menschenhand unberührte Waldlichtung mit kleinem Weiher aussieht, entpuppt sich bei näherer Kenntnis der Umstände als Bombenkrater, der bei Luftangriffen der USA auf Kambodscha entstanden war."
