Item Overview

Description

A rocky landscape with travellers resting beside ruins
oil on panel, unframed
16 1/4 x 21 1/2 in. (41.3 x 54.6 cm.)

The Dukes of Sutherland, Lancaster House, London and Dunrobin Castle, Scotland, and by descent to the present owner.

Notes

Born in Minnertsga and mayor of Franeker in 1637-9, Mancadan resided in Friesland for his entire career. He is not thought to have started painting until he settled in Leeuwarden in 1645, presumably inspired by the Frisian scenery around the farm he owned at Siegerswoude. Working in this remote setting, Mancadan developed a personal and unmistakable style; his pictures, as here, usually focus on small corners of bare landscape with overgrown ruins rendered with a limited palette and highly detailed brushwork.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
